| Microsoft Media Player shreds your rights Microsoft Media Player shreds your rights Blurb: "Microsoft is tightening the screws on their up & coming DRM platform. First, Windows Media Player 11 removes the right to move music from one machine to another. According to their website, WMP11 'does not permit you to back up your media usage rights (previously known as licenses).' Worse, if you rip your own CDs and the 'Copy protect music' option is turned on, WMP11 will require you to 'connect to a Microsoft Web page that explains how to restore your rights a limited number of times.'"
It's bad enough already you have to justify yourself to Microsoft every time you change a piece of hardware in your computer.. but now they want you to justify yourself to them whenever you burn a cd, play a music flie, or try to copy it from one computer to another? It's getting very ridiculous. I know some people scoffed at whether or not "palladium" would ever become a reality, but it certainly seems like it's heading that way. I'm really trying to use windows for as little as I can. I have Ubuntu set up and working for almost everything, but some school classes require I use software that really only works on Windows.. like Visual C++ .NET | ||||

| I have Ubuntu as well but cannot find X-Fi drivers for my soundcard (so the OS is still completely silent) and as well I cannot crank up my video card resolution beyond 1024x768 -- even though the proper ATi drivers are in place. It's still a good OS though, UNIX is FTW | ||||

| I don't use WMP much cause it sucks. I have no issues with DRM because i refuse to use infected content | ||||

| It seems ridiculous that anyone would pay for content that so tightly restricted. I guess if you don't have a choice that's one thing but luckily for now most people still do. Eventually it'll only be the savvier folks who have free access to their own data. | ||||

| Hopefully as Linux becomes more and more user friendly and has access to more and more hardware manufacturers for drivers, the open source software movement will gain traction. Especially as we start raising generations that are used to everything about computers, hopefully they'll be more tech savvy and willing to make independent choices about their operating system, and software. | ||||

| How is this WM Player shreding your rights? It's their software, they can allow whatever kind of restrictions they want. If you don't like it, use iTunes. | ||||
