Study: Oceans have cooled in recent years

Study: Oceans have cooled in recent years

Despite the long term warming trend seen around the globe, the oceans have cooled in the last three years, scientists announced today.

The experts have spoken again. It's gotta be due to global warming.

The temperature drop, a small fraction of the total warming seen in the last 48 years, suggests that global warming trends can sometimes take little dips.

In the last century, Earth's temperature has risen about 1 degree Fahrenheit (0.56 degrees Celsius). Most scientists agree that much of the warming in the past 50 years has been fueled by the burning of fossil fuels and other human activities.

"This research suggests global warming isn't always steady, but happens with occasional 'speed bumps,'" said study co-author Josh Willis, a researcher at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. "This cooling is probably natural climate variability. The oceans today are still warmer than they were during the 1980s, and most scientists expect the oceans will eventually continue to warm in response to human-induced climate change."

The experts have spoken again. Those who make threads should read more than just the tagline.

And as a sidenote, I don't necessarily believe in global warming. What I do believe, however, is that this thread sucks.

No. Global warming could be happening, but it's not because of humans, and it's not going to happen like we think.

I think to say "It's not" because of humans is neive. Thats not to say you're wrong but the fact is we just dont know enough about it at this point.

I think it's arrogant to think humans, in their every day normal life, impact the earth that much. There are larger and more catastrophic events that the earth does on its own, and yet it still thrives.

He did offer something of value.
The fact that Ballz has yet again cherrypicked from a story without reading it and made a fool of himself.

Isn't it also arrogant to say that the billions of tons of CO2 we dump into the atmosphere each day have no affect?

Large volcanic eruptions don't affect the environment and they dump tonnes of nasty stuff into the atmosphere.

Oh wait......

You really think we dump that much into the atmosphere compared to the rest of nature?

Oh I read it. Of course they're going to say 'well this just proves that despite global warming, it'll cool at some points too'. Every scientist attempts to explain something after the fact.

Aren't you like a bio-chemist or something?

That's what science is. If you try and explain something before an observation it's a guess, not science.

Bingo, which is why I know. Like them we don't know how things work or how they are supposed to work or how they are going to work. We wait to see the results, then we try to explain them. That's how most of science is. That's why I laugh when I read these global warming explanations. Every time something happens that the 'experts' didn't expect, they say 'oh well, that makes sense, cause that could certainly be possible'. Well duh, anything is possible.

And that's my whole point about global warming, it's a guess, one that is used for political purposes and has yet to be proven.

Not at all, the Mt St Hellens eruption dumped more pollution into the upper atmosphere than man has in 100+ years. But to say we have zero affect when we dont really know much about causes of global warming isn't necessarily right. I think if we're having an affect its small but I haven't ruled out the possibility that you and I may in some way be altering the climate.

So what would it really matter if we lowered our impact from .01% to .005%? My point is that we affect it in such a small amount...the earth is HUGE...and we're arrogant enough to think our actions really change the earth at all. Sure, we see what's in front of our face; an oil spill, garbage on the side of the road, etc. And I have no problem trying to clearn up the environment around us, out of respect for ourselves and the environment. But don't go sueing car companies, don't go telling me I can't drive SUVs, don't go scaring people into oblivion about the end of civilization for some fake make-believe scenario.

The vast majority of scientists disagree with that statement. We have already had this discussion and I have already given you evidance to that effect.

From the same article you posted
Roger Pielke Jr., director of the Center for Science and Technology Policy Research at the University of Colorado, said in an interview later Monday that climate scientists involved with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change concluded that most of the warming is due to human activity.

“Bill Gray is a widely respected senior scientist who has a view that is out of step with a lot of his colleagues’,
