I can't watch that weightlifting stuff because that type of knee abuse makes me cringe and I just can't watch it. (yes, I am sensitive about knees)...

It should be noted, however, that America has participated in the games since it started in 1896. Only 14 countries participated that year. Then you look at the 3rd Olympic games held in St. Louis and America had 523 competitors out of 630 total. We got 242 medals that year (79 Gold) and second place, Germany, got 13 medals (4 gold). That was largely the "home field advantage" (if you will) because most other games around that time were dominated by the host country... but none in those early years had that big of a spread. The same thing happened in the 1932 Olympics when we hosted again, with only 37 nations represented, we got 103 medals (41 gold) compared to second place, Italy, who got 36 medals (12 gold). It's pretty crazy, especially in those early years. And China has only participated in 16 summer games (including this year) and 10 winter games. Russia has also only participated in 16 summer games, but 13 winter games. Compare those numbers to America participating in all 26 Summer games and all 20 winter games, and our numbers aren't near as impressive anymore ![]() Just throwing that out there. | ||||

| That was SO close.. I really thought he lost it, thank god they have touch sensors and it's not a time kept by humans or he might have actually lost They said awhile ago that they refused to accept the challenge based on the video, so he will keep that gold I really hope he gets his 8th tomorrow | ||||

| The BBC have a Phelps statue that they adorn with medals to show his progress. Whenever its shown the Star Bangled Banner plays. Oddly, perhaps, its the Hendrix version, it cuts out before the machine gun bit. Either way the when he became the most successful Olympian ever the chatterinbg classes, hit with a fit of pedantry, debated if he was the greatest Olympian ever, ..., most gave it to Jesse Owen IIRR the East Europeans used to drug gymnastic girls to delay puberty, quite how this is an advantage I dont know. I seem to recall claims that movie studios also sought to do so for the likes of Garland etc No big drug scandals so far, which surprises me. But I really hope UK swimmer Adlington passes. The whole new swimsuit fingy is also odd I dont see how iot make that big a difference. & why do so many swimmers splash water on their chest before lining up? I've quite enjoyed the Badminton which isnt a sport I normally watch. I'm surprised that there are so few Yanks in the cycling. I'd've thought that Armstrong would've raised the sports profile Stateside. Perhaps any such effect has yet to play out? Isnt there a population adjusted medal league table that could be averaged out per games attended? If so I suspect Oz might fare very well. We're already looking forward to the closing ceremony & the hand over to 'the clunking fist' of GB for Team GB, ..., Becks on a bus apparently. Proposed events for London 2012 include the 400m Javelin relay, downhill economic management & possibly even competitive Stadium building | ||||

| I can't believe it really.. he needed everything to go perfect, and it did. It's really a testament to how good he is that he could have to put his all in so many swims compared to the other swimmers.. and still beat them out, setting world record times The only slight stain is that he didn't set a world record in that one where he won by .01, but no one should really care about that.. the bottom line is that he won, fair, against the best in the world. | ||||

| Okay time for track the 100 record has fallen 9.69 seconds. How could a guy that tall run so fast it seems like it would take him forever to get going. To bad about Gay being hurt. He would have had a chance. | ||||

| I don't know if anyone else watched the gold medal match between USA and China in Women's Beach Volleyball last night, but what a game! Walsh/May haven't even lost a set in 108 games now... those two rock. | ||||

| I've enjoyed the beach volleyball despite the distracting game of musical chairs that seems to be happening just round the corner. But I've liked the marathon swimming more, ..., both men & women's taces have had epic finishes & included 'ennobling' tales of courage overcoming advertisy of amputation & cancer. Plus the race has in-built argy-bargy for extra added contention. Heres a link to this years medal table by pop, gdp & other fings http://c4news.com/livepages/olympics...csResults.html now also by team size as well http://www.billmitchell.org/sport/medal_tally_2008.html I find the distance of Holts 100m victory suspicious, but the Jamacian team seem to have been very heavily drug tested by the authorities, so much blood has been taken that the Jamacian press has dubbed them'vampires'. Equally the GB supremacy in the velodrome can be seen as possibly dodgy too, but again the sport is very heavily policed thruout the year. It seems that although Mr Brown will attend it'll be London mayor Boris Johnson who'll be accepting the torch in the closing ceremony. On behalf of the British ppl I'd just like to apologise in advance for whatever offence/f*ck up the celebrated buffon will inevitably cause Last edited by avsp; 08-21-2008 at 03:54 PM.. | The women's gymnastics tiebreaker was bullshit.. Once again we've seen a higher score for the Chinese gymnasts than was deserved.. the Australian judge didn't take off enough points from the routine.. And to top it off, the Gold went to a gymnast who's been cheating the entire time. Really disappointing. | ||||
