7-11 drops Citgo gasoline...

They're publicly saying it has nothing to do with Hugo's comments last week, but they're taking down all their Citgo signs, ending their deal and moving to US only oil.

7-11 Boots CITGO

BHL has obtained a copy of a letter from Janey Carpenter, Manager of Consumer Affairs that states 7-11 Stores are ending their 20-year supply agreement with CITGO Petroleum Corp. According to Carpenter, the contract ends next week and 7-11 is now making the switch to its own branded gasoline. The company says the change has nothing to do with derogatory comments made last week by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez at the United Nations. Nevertheless, 7/11 Stores will begin selling in October gas provided by US companies, such as Tower Energy Group in Torrance, CA., Sinclair Oil of Salt Lake City and Frontier Oil Corp of Houston. Carpenter says the signs will start to change, with CITGO signs coming down from the stores' gas canopy and off gasoline dispensers. More than 2,100 stores are affected. While most of the signs will be changed by end of '07, not all CITGO signs will be off gas canopies until '08.
This comes at a time when Florida wants to boot Citgo from their turnpike:
local6.com - Local News - Lawmaker Wants Citgo Stations Removed From Fla. Turnpike
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- A South Florida lawmaker wants the state to remove Citgo gas stations from Florida's Turnpike.

State Representative Adam Hasner is raising the issue following last week's comments by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez at the United Nations, who said President George W. Bush was "the devil."

Citgo is owned by the national oil company of Venezuela.

In a letter to the state Department of Transportation, Hasner asks whether the state can terminate the contracts of Citgo gas stations at toll plazas along the Turnpike.

In his letter, the Delray Beach Republican said a clear message needs to be sent to Chavez that the state of Florida "will not support institutions that seek the destabilization of America."

A spokesman for the Department of Transportation said that the agency is reviewing the request.

I love it. He comes into our house and starts shitting in the living room, now we're giving him the boot. America, state and businesses, are starting to tell Hugo to take his oil and shove it up his ass where it belongs. Fox News is telling it's viewers to boycott Citgo.

Chavez's Citgo Is No Friend of America by Mac Johnson
What was once a respected “American” corporation, which happened to be owned by and partnered with the National Oil Co. of Venezuela, Petróleos de Venezuela S.A. (PDVSA), is now the American directorate of Chavez’s anti-American revolution.

Sounds good to me. Most of the 7-11's here were bought out by a place that calls itself "Kum and Go"

We dont have many citgo's in this state, but even if we did I wouldn't buy it their gas is typically refined from a superheavy crude that can in some cases burn dirty depending on where it was refined.

There's only one refinery that can do a good job of refining super heavy crude that comes from chavez. There's a handfull of refineries that are "capable" of dealing with it but aren't necessarily effecient.

Venezuela’s state oil company, will stop selling gasoline in 10 states and parts of four others after deciding to stop buying fuel from other petroleum processors.

“Two things are clear,” said Roger Tissot, an oil analyst with PFC Energy, a consulting firm in Washington. “Venezuela wants to reduce its dependence on the U. S., and it wants to position itself in the world’s fastest-growing markets, such as India and China.”

They talked about this on NPR today a bit. They had two people speaking and while I certainly agree with the sentiment behind trying to get away from Venezuelen (and all foreign) oil dependence.. one made a good point.

They have refineries here, and employ thousands of people throughout the country. 2000 or so at one specific plant. If they're boycotted and ousted, those people will lose their jobs.. but the oil will simply go to another country.

Venezuela wont be impacted financially really, because it's not like there's some lack of demand for the oil, especially he cheap kind which Chavez seems to be willing to "donate" in some instances.

So, essentially.. some 2 thousand+ Americans would probably wind up being out of a job, and it'd have almost no impact on Venezeula financially.
