Obama camp: We're not arrogant

Barack Obama’s deputy campaign manager, Steve Hildebrand, dismissed the notion Tuesday that the Democratic camp is arrogant and instead pointed a finger at John McCain’s campaign for not working hard enough.

“If we’re overconfident, I don't know why we're working so hard,” Hildebrand said during an interview on MSNBC.

He added that “if arrogance means getting up and starting your day around 6 a.m., and ending it around 11 or midnight — you know, reporters all over the country have told us they've gone by Obama headquarters late at night [and seen] dozens and dozens of workers. They go by McCain headquarters and the doors are closed and the lights are off.”

"We're not overconfident. This race is urgent.”

The McCain camp has mocked their Democrat opponent as arrogant throughout the race, most notably when Obama’s campaign unveiled its own presidential seal with a Latin translation of “yes we can” replacing the “e pluribus unum” (out of many, one) emblazoned on that seal of the United States.

On the stump Tuesday, McCain again hit Obama for “measuring the drapes” ahead of next week’s election.

“Let me give you the state of the race today,” McCain said in Hershey, Pa. “There’s one week to go. We’re a few points down. The pundits wrote us off, as they have several times before. My opponent is out working out the details with Speaker Pelosi and Sen. Reid on their plans to raise your taxes, increase spending and concede defeat in Iraq.”

“He's measuring the drapes and he's planned his first address to the nation before the election,” McCain said.

“By the way, no one will delay the World Series game with an infomercial when I'm president,” McCain added, referring to plans by the Obama campaign to run a half-hour special on the candidate ahead of Wednesday’s game, delaying its start by about 15 minutes.
