It isn't about holding them forever. It's about taking terrorists and insurgents off the streets. In any war, if you capture the enemy you don't give them a punishment and then send them on their merry way to join the front lines again.

We need a way of holding people during this war. I don't agree with the way it's being done, but until a better suggestion is made by Congress it's what we have to deal with. Where's the Democratic proposal on how to treat these prisoners? Where's the legislation?

The Democrats pushed this on America. They backed our military and servicemen into a wall with no solutions and now they're crying when the inevitable happens.

Okay, you and I are not talking about the same thing. If this bill passes and becomes a law, the writ of habeas corpus is out the window. Despite all of your examples this will be an historic first for the United States and a danger to all free people.

Where's the Democratic proposal on how to treat these prisoners? Where's the legislation
?
the Democrats got shot down in the Republican controlled assembly.

The Democrats pushed this on America. They backed our military and servicemen into a wall with no solutions and now they're crying when the inevitable happens.
There you go again, it is now the Democrats fault that the republicans passed a bill that will now allow dentention without a process to prove innocence. That is the Democrats fault?? Is it only Democrats who believe we are a humane society and therefore we respect the human condition and would hope that respect is returned in the event it involves one of our own? Is it only the Democrats that have the hope that through our standard of humane treatment of detainees, our soldiers will recieve the same treatment????
Ugh you even pulled me off subject. Torture is truly the least of this bill! Basic Democratic rights are what is at stake here.

it was the supreme court full of republican appointed judges, 4 of which are hard right wing conservatives, 1 is a general republican conservative, which forms a majority

and im not comparing hitler to bush, i am just pointing out how ridiculous this situation is...

I still can't get over how you have no problem with someone mistakingly thinking you are an enemy of the state, and you being raped, tortured and detained forever...

but jesus christ, if someone talks about raising your taxes 1%, you'll throw a temper tantrum

nice priorities

Unless of course that 1% is to support "the march of democracy".

There was a bill similar to this that was pushed by the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary committee back in 2000 to deal with similar issues. Only, it didn't kill America, and didn't nullify our Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

The Democrats pushed this on America. They backed our military and servicemen into a wall with no solutions and now they're crying when the inevitable happens.
How delusional

Critical analysis is apparently too much effort.

Is this a joke? How are you blaming this on the Democrats?
By wanting oversight they went and made the president allow torture?

No solutions? How about not waterboarding people? Is that too difficult?

A case has to be filed and it has to be appealed to SCOTUS.

The terrorists are winning. We are slowly giving up the very freedoms that this country was founded on in the name of fighting terrorism.
The most important thing in our country ,behind the constituition itself, is the Bill of Rights. It is what separates us, or shall I say, separated, us from other more dictatorial countries.
We are slowly making many of THE MOST IMPORTANT provisions in that bill subject to the approval of the president.

How can anyone in any party possibly support this???

Both sides are doing this. Liberals are giving up the freedoms of our soldiers and military for the sake of terrorists. And Republicans are giving up the freedoms of our citizens for the sake of making us "safer". In the end, both parties are shitting on us and finger-pointing.

The Dems bitch and moan about the PATRIOT ACT, yet it has had no trouble passing each year...

right...

The minority party, which has control over absolutely nothing, is doing that...not only that, but a minority of the minority party is doing that

As opposed 54 out of 55 GOP senators passing bills to limit our freedoms

REAL nice comparison

Democrats run their mouth and exploit issues in Iraq. They make shit up and jump the gun... often at the expense of our military and our individual soldiers.

It's interesting how this thread is about habius corpus and all that jazz, yet the SAME people agree with Murtha and his handling of our soldiers.

It's all the same crap. Is this legislation good? Hell no. But, it is the direct result of the liberal clammering.

the ruling was made because of a republican appointed supreme court, the deciding vote was made by a conservative republican

and democrats "run their mouth and exploit issues in iraq" right...

you take that one line from Murtha and you take it up like its part of the Democratic Party platform

do you see me still yapping about Republicans who said people wanting a debate on government wiretaps are more interesting in protecting terrorists than Americans?

Well i guess thats it, the Republican party officially thinks Democrats, about half the country, is more interested in protecting terrorists than Americans
