California: Vote YES on Prop 5!

YouTube Video
ERROR: If you can see this, then YouTube is down or you don't have Flash installed.

Proposition 5 will cut state costs. The nonpartisan Legislative Analyst estimates those savings at $2.5 billion or more. Prop. 5 safely eases prison overcrowding by investing in drug treatment - which costs much less than prison - for youth and nonviolent offenders. Prop. 5 provides treatment with strict accountability.

Prop. 5 is supported by the League of Women Voters of California, Consumer Federation of California, California Nurses Association, California Society of Addiction Medicine, California Federation of Teachers - and many others.

Prop. 5 is opposed by the state prison guards' union, which has contributed almost $2 million for deceptive TV ads. Prison guards benefit from prison overcrowding and new prison building, but California loses. - Yes on Proposition 5: The Nonviolent Offender Rehabilitation Act

Kevin Booth, creator of American Drug War: The Last White Hope, will be appearing on the nationally syndicate Alex Jones Radio Show on Friday, October 31, at 11amP/2pmE to discuss Prop 5 and its implications.

^IDK, nobody has a crystal ball, but I can tell you that all that stuff about the state closing prisons, laying off and cutting pay for guards, etc. that's actually happening in Michigan, where a similar program has been put in place to cut down on state costs through treatment programs and lighter sentences for drug offenders a few years ago.

In the first few years though, it was quite expensive.

^you guys have a lot of money too, around here, we've even been leasing out some of our recently emptied prison space to house some of your prisoners, a measure I strongly support, btw.

So what will happen is the state hospitals will be overcrowded which are already understaffed and causeing forced 16 hour shifts all the time. It's just a shell game.

Did your other Yes vote (the metro one) include that stupid high-speed bullet train from SF to LA?

One of my housemates works for the LGBT advocacy group here in Washington, the Human Rights Campaign. From everything I've heard from him (they're hugely involved in the Prop 8 fight, obviously), it looks like the measure will fail by about a 55-45 margin.

I take that with a grain of salt, though, because it wouldn't surprise me if they're trying to stay optimistic even if things aren't going so well.

It was a Los Angeles County measure to do rail extensions to LAX. Expand the subway/metrolin/bus services too. Something that Los Angeles should've have been doing back in the 50's to catch-up with cities like NYC, Chicago and Boston. I know if I could take the metro or subway anywhere in LA county I would use it.

I hope so. I live in South Bay, the Manhattan Beach and North Redondo communities are flooded with Yes on 8 signs. But I feel these two areas are majorly GOP because I see a lot of McCain/Palin signs around here.

Hey...I used to live in MB, (40th and Kelp) RB, RPV! Every weekend we played volleyball at 1300 The Strand courts. Our friends lived in that house, the one that always had the July 4th parties when you were about 5, lol. It's been demolished since....but the memories are there!

A buddy of mine opened up this place in MB: Los Angeles Night Club - Upper Manhattan Lounge and Restaurant

I voted yes on 5. I'm also a supporter of LEAP.

Nice. I'm a resident in North Redondo, and I haven't seen Upper Manhattan but I'll have to check it out next time. My mom and I usually get together and have lunch a couple times a week at Wahoo's, the Kettle or Hennessey's. I love South Bay wouldn't live anywhere else in Los Angeles County.
