who were leaked copies of the e-mail with the Louisiana boy last year — defended their decision not to run stories...including Fox News.

Nixon: I think your analysis is off, this is a story the resonates with the people involved with GOTV and many value voters were weren't active

Remember how the election changed because Bush got a DUI like how many decades ago? THAT story from the network news kept HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of christians home, now times that by 100x for the factor the the headlines reading about GOP leaders pointing fingers at each other, Wash Times calling for Hastert to resign, GOP leaders calling in Foley, having enough concern to confront a powerful congressman, and yet didn't bother to take the matter any further...not even a light investigation...and refusing to share it with the one democrat involved

People hear your arguments about decades ago about corrupt Democrats and they all think "old news" at least subconciously, the GOP is supposed to be "above that" thats why they took power...you have every grocery store having frontpage pictures of a house leader having online sex with a 16 year old boy during house votes, and house leaders finding out but doing nothing...EVERYONE with a kid can connect with that

Gas prices could jump 2 dollars, the economy could tank, we could suffer 200 dead in 2 days in Iraq, none of that would come close to mattering as much as this Foley scandal

It has secured the Democrats the House and possibly the Senate

Besides falling poll numbers already starting, and seats being just given up, and a GOP completely without a message this crucial week...we have an objective source to look at:

When people were saying it was "likely" the GOP was going to lose the House, intrade.com and other online share sites had the odds at 60% for the GOP holding on to power, today it hit below 40%...and it might go lower

I don't believe 50,000 political investors betting thousands of thousands of dollars are just throwing down money because of one bad story, they know how much this destroys the GOP's chances

It would take a minor miracle for the GOP to win

Tradesports' House GOP control contract lost a full 10 points today.

The Senate contract lost 7.

So apparently the consensus is that this will be huge, unless there is some other cause of the huge drop today.

You gotta love how that Iraq intelligence report completely contradicting Bush's war rationale had almost no effect.

But the e-mails are not the exciting story stuff. Who had the 2003 IM's and who leaked them now? This is political, don't doubt it. But that is no excuse for Foley by a mile!

I am not that concerned with poll numbers unless it is likely voters. Thorgrim is right that this will hurt the GOP if the Base stays home. That would obviously be the problem with Foley's seat in a Republican district. Even with the new guy running you have to mark Foley on the ballot and some in the GOP might just not vote for that slot even if they do go to the polls.

why is he coming out and saying he was molested? first he admits himself into rehab, confesses that he is an alcoholic, then comes out and says he was molested by a clergyman. is it supposed to be a sympathy move, or what? play the victim role, maybe the voters will say "oh, he was molested, its not his fault he likes young boys. he had no choice! the republican party is still for me!" i mean, the guy is a pervert, but 16 is not THAT young. its not like he was hangin out in the park with lollipops and no pants.

and before i get the "so you think child molestation is a joke?!" sort of comments, i think the guy is a total pervert, obviously. that said, it seems to me that it would be in most peoples, and especially a politicians best interest (if ever in this sort of situation

) is to just shut up and try to hide out for a bit. go into hiding like dick cheney on 9-11, but dont go the media and clean out your closet.

do you think the republicans just fed foley to the wolves in order to save face?

This bothered me also. Because if he did something so disgusting, coming out with that, at this point in time, is just trying to deter attention from his actions, and placing it on an easy out...the Catholic Church.

I don't see the point or relevance in him telling everyone this. If he did a crime, he should do time, just like every other pervert.

Does anyone care about the child molesters, and rapists currently locked up who were sexually abused as children? Do any of them get a pass? Not that I know of. If they did a crime, they still do time (allbeit, not as much as one would like, but that's another topic).

thats sort of the point. its well known that some (many) kids that have been molested or abused tend to have the same tendencies as adults. so its an easy thing to throw it out there, hoping people might somehow be less angry when he can be seen as a victim. its just weird timing.

the white house would love nothing better than the focus of the media move towards this story, and away from iraq and donald rumsfield. i think he is a sacrifice of the republicans.
