Also, why should they have to give up their careers? I mean, if they've made the military their life, seems like they shouldn't be forced to throw all of that away with a resignation before they're ready.

not at all. Leaders stand up for what is right even if that means taking it on the chin (btw retiring at 28 years as a 3 star general is not taking it on the chin).

They are entrusted with the people under their command, if they truly believe that the plan is FUBAR then they need to resign and take it into the public

From what I understand from their position, is that many of them feel responsible for the men under them. I could understand them wanting to stick around, and try to save the lambs from the slaughter.

Well, you even said that the followed orders and we went all good the first few months of Iraq...and then the orders to stabalize, which is a really vague order, especially for that region, the Administration has no clue how to do that, and they gave the generals a goal that's not attainable within my own lifetime.

Sorry, I can see why a general would try to stay in, and do what they can, and use their training and skills to make the best of it.

If this was 3 years ago, and all these generals were resigning then, the right would be claiming that they don't get the Bush plan, or smear them in some other way. And it is more because they disagree than it is whether or not when and why they step down. Them coming out against the Administration, is what taints them, not how they came to be able to speak out.
