We'll do what's already done now in public schools. Depict those areas with maps with blue and red lines, maybe show a picture of the mushroom cloud in an inset in the textbook.

Little Johnny read The Outsiders this week in school and he said "poop" at the dinner table tonight!

Damn that Ponyboy ruining my family. I had them nice and cozy in their little bubble too.

I seriously think these people should move to Amish country. That's more their pace.

Saying '100 million people were killed' is a lot different than reading explicit descriptions of gore, or seeing movie that depict it. You don't have to describe violence to explain that so many people were killed, do you?

in the case of this school alternate material is offered for those with specific concerns about Bradburys book, that still (apparently), addressed similar issues

thus b2w should be happy with the situation. I quite like it too.

thus the parents in question position is a little wierd, ..., they are objecting to the school using it at all

equally though the casual dipiction of violence endemic in media now totally misrepresents the reality, ..., & thus education can be limited by failing to show 'the dead bodies piled up in mounds'

it was easier for my generation, ..., we had nagasaki & holocaust survivors visit our classroom

If I remember correctly, the "filthy language" used in the book are the words 'damn' and 'hell.'

Like I said, I don't know anything specifically about this book, but I'm speaking more in a general sense. I'd have to read this book before I decide what's fit for my kids.

I don't have a problem with that. I would like to know what my kids are reading as well. But in this specific example, this guy is an idiot. It's a fantastic work on authoritarian society.

But if you find a book offensive, are you all for people banning the book for the whole school based on your sensibilities?

If it is questionable material, it should not be presented. It is not necessary, given the plethora of literature out there without questionable material. The operative term is 'questionable' in case you haven't picked that up.

Of course not. But I would be for not allowing my child to read it.

But what's questionable to you and what's questionable to me are two different things. If the school and I agree, why should your opinion matter more?

I'm fine with that too. Teach your kids whatever you want. Tell them the moon is made of cheese for all I care.
Just don't interfere with my childs education by banning something only you find questionable.

Exactly. But the fact that it's questionable to anybody makes it just that, questionable. Obviously there are extremes (perhaps this guy) but I'm sure we all have a good handle on what questionable material is. Otherwise, there wouldn't be a rating system for video games, movies and TV.

No. Wrong. That's not correct. If I think it's not questionable you think it is, that doesn't make it questionable.

If you don't like the school curriculum, don't send your kids to that school. Send them to private school or homeschool them.
