No it isn't.

Notice how it says "open to" in your little quotes. What makes it "open to"? The fact that you don't like it?

I don't think math is correct. Now algebra is "questionable".

Guess what? It wouldn't be questionable if you homeschooled or sent them to private school. You don't have a right to not be offended. You don't have a right to have the entire curriculum change because that's not how you would teach your kids.

in this instance the 'informal' arrangement of providing alternate titles in class seems eminently sensible & 'fair-minded'

plus it may give the class more to discuss

lastly, i'd be surprised (& disappointed) if many kids didnt read the 'taboo' title anyway, ..., but then maybe thats the parent concern

personally i'd want kids to read questionable titles in such a context, so that the issue of 'questionability' can be explored

Exactly. These people think that can keep their kids in the bubble and away from questionable things that they think are ruining our kids. What ruins our kids is keeping them away from things like this and not letting them draw their own conclusions. You can't act as if these things don't exist in the world.

OTOH other people see it differently & wish to 'protect' their kids from 'unsuitable' titles, ..., which is fair enough IMO

this is why i applaud the school in question

such a split in the classroom would in & of itself provide for an interesting & educational discussion

Are there no mainstrean non-porn books that you'd think twice about your 15 year old reading? Or does the 'classroom' context make it all alright?

quite, ..., it does seem weird, ..., especially as the school allows for alternate titles to be substituted

I remember a book my mom got upset about; Flower in the Attic or something like that. It was a book that my school wanted me to read. It has some graphic incest scene in it. Looking back at it now, I still don't think it should be given in school as reading material. The schools shouldn't be giving questionable reading material out to read, that's it. Whether one person things graphic sex scenes is questionable or not (or graphic language) is exactly the point; we all know it's offensive to many people. There is plenty of great literature that is neutral in those areas.

We all know that if this was material that offended muslims, it would be yanked out of the school system, no questions asked.

@ Your school assigning V.C. Andrews....

That's hardly literary. That's more like a Harlequin Novel.

Catcher in the Rye has been on the banned list before, so has Fahrenheit....The list is very long, and some titles would suprise you.

There are some major Fiction books I've read with pornographic scenes.

Memoirs of a Geisha
Timequake, Vonnegut
Lolita, Nobokov

And those are books I've read in the past year or so.

The Context is absolutley important. And that's why teachers discuss the material with the students, to talk about context and how it applies to the overall theme.

This isn't just a literary lesson, it's a life lesson. Because it teaches kids that this once instance of something happening can have application to other situations. It teaches the to draw parallels in life.

My opinion, on people who want to remove material from schools, or want to advocate or defend it, is that they don't have a valid opinion unless they know the material.

"I want to ban addition from schools. No, I don't know how to add, and have never done it, but I FEEL it's inappropriate."

To me, it's the same level.

As a parent, when my kiddo gets a reading list (He even has one at his Preschool) I look the books up and see what they are about. I just Wiki them, or I get them at the library. Because I want to know what he's reading and being read. It's called Parenting.

When the day comes that he might get a book that has some auspicious material, then I'll know what the material is, and I can talk about it with him at home. I could tell him what I percieve the theme of 1984 is, I'd be able to have an opinion because I know the material, instead of screaming witchhunt on a book I've never read.

No. I can't think of anything non-porn that I would object to my high schooler reading. Someone can feel free to start listing works of literature. I can guarantee I wouldn't have a problem.

By the time they are in highschool, you had better be able to explain anything they come across rather than going "OMG, Swear words and Sex, ban it"

In any case, "vulgar" words have never caused any harm as such.
