GOP Majority Leader: Make peace with Taliban

QALAT, Afghanistan U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said Monday that the Afghan guerrilla war can never be won militarily and called for efforts to bring the Taliban and their supporters into the Afghan government.

Wow, just fucking wow, the people that helped 9/11 are going to get a peace deal so we can waste billions of dollars in Iraq

If we had focused on Afghanistan, used that $300 billion dollars and 140,000 permanent rotation of troops, it'd be a wonderful success story...now we are at this level...a Republican led government calling for peace for those who attacked us on 9/11

What is next, are we going to grovel to Osama bin Laden himself?

It may do some good in so far as it could reduce hostility towards the US in Afganistan.

I also think the idea of the Taliban sitting there planning the attack does not really have much basis. They got bombed becuase they wouldn't co-operate, not because they helped terrorists.

Holy crap, that's crazy..

It's like they've totally forgotten that the Taliban is who we should be really focusing on, since they gave shelter to Osama.. and that those we're fightin in Iraq, are, for the most part, taking part in a civil war we've started.

I hope this makes it onto a bunch of Democrat TV spots, I mean, talk about not wanting to win the war on terrorism.. giving up on fighting people who actually attacked us is one way to go about that.

You honestly want members of the Taliban accepted in American occupied areas...what about your neighborhood?

Yeah, but that's a different characterization of who the terrorists are.

Like I said, the Taliban would need an "Extreme Makeover" (wru Ty Pennington!) and a new mission statement for them to be allowed to participate in the Government.

It's kind of like Sadr's movement. Yeah, he's no longer fighting us, but his militia still takes part in assassinations and other things contributing to the civil war there.. which in turn causes problems for us if we're in the line of fire, and it makes it more difficult to secure.

If there's some air of legitimacy to the Taliban, it risks becoming a "peoples movement" rather than an "outcast movement".

I see only three options:

1) exterminate them
2) find a way to include them (at least the ones who swear off violance/oppression) in a productive government
3) continue a gorilla war for an indefinate period

I like #1 pretty well. They helped those who attacked us directly, we should ensure that movement is as dead as can be.

I think when we've decimated their forces, ensuring that the Afghani government has a capable military installed that can deal with them is a better solution than trying to stay there indefinitely.

Unfortunately, we've been diverted away from the real terrorists by Iraq.. and we're pouring billions of dollars into that clusterfuck of a civil war instead of finishing the job in Afghanistan like we should have.

none of the backwards Taliban are going to do anything to us in the US. The problem is Osama and his well-educated and well-funded friends, not the Taliban. The Taliban never attacked the US and never will.

we stopped fighting the nazis in germany after WWII, even after there was still nazis in germany, did we give up?

we didn't do that and we aren't going to do that in afghanistan. But eventually the taliban members are going to be included in the government
