Now you can't talk in airports unless it is english

Man questioned and misses flight for speaking Tamil

The man was speaking Tamil, a language largely used in India, Sri Lanka and Singapore, on his cell phone at the departure gate and on the aircraft. An off-duty airline employee heard the conversation and informed the flight crew.
Maybe not offical policy, but it just getting over the top.

If the guy was acting suspicious and speaking another language why can't they question him?

No, but we weren't there we do not know what other possible signs of nervousness may have been exhibited.

You aren't supposed to be talking on a cell phone on the plane anyway.

My mom gets EXTREMELY nervous before flying. Should she be singled out for being nervous?

I love this "they singled him out so there must have been something" mentality...ranks right up there with "if you're not doing anything wrong what do you have to worry about?"

Yes, you can until they make the announcement and/or close the door.

This is probably no different than the guys they thought "were speaking Arabic" who were tossed off the plane because apparently, if you speak Arabic, you're a terrorist

Or, the guy who had Arabic writing on his t-shirt and was forced to change shirts before being allowed to board the aircraft, because, Arabic writing means you're a terrorist..

Yes one of many things that would encourage more security.

No. Every police officer/security does the same thing. You dont search everyone equally, that would be foolish. You focus on certain traits. Each one gets a point attached to it. A 90 year old woman that is alittle nervous isnt going to get searched more then the general population. But if a young male traveling alone, acts nervous, one way tickets, etc..... then yes you do more security measures or just watch them closer.

If your mom is looking or acting suspicious than why not?

I've been searched several times for "acting nervous" truth is I'm just a fidgity person...that and my balls itch a lot I doesn't bother me that I've been "singled out" at least they're searching. I'm a young male, typically travel alone and understand why they're performing the searches...granted it is still a pain in the ass but I understand it.

1. He was at the depature gate, not on the plane.

2. He was speaking a mix of tamil and english, is this suspicous?

More than likely an overzealous person "scared" into thinking anything they cannot understand is suspicious, espically as it included a sporting rivarly
