And they definately have rulers. They view god as the supreme ruler. They live by extremly strict laws that they set for themselves. If you violate those laws you can be kicked out of thier community.

the way it's written it seems contradictory but it's not... the amish live by their own laws and rules, set by amish. I think what he meant to say was they live by laws the amish defined for themselves, not each individual amish person.

That is anarchism. Anarchism is not without order. It just with voluntary orders and rulers.

not according to this (and others, wiki just says it better):

Anarchism is the name of a political philosophy or a group of doctrines and attitudes that are centered on rejection of government, or the state, as harmful and unnecessary and support its elimination.[1]The term "anarchism" is derived from the Greek αναρχία ("without archons" or "without rulers"). Thus "anarchism," in its most general meaning, is the belief that all forms of rulership are undesirable and should be abolished.

One form of anarchism, anarcho-capitalism, believes in the contractual society to it's fullest extent. This means that in reality, any government can form within a community, so long as every person agrees into a contract with a governing authority. Anarchy in it's fullest extent means I know what's best for me and I have the right to engage into that. So that if I choose to live in a dictatorship, democracy, republic, or any other government, as long as I enter into that society contractually and can leave that society at my choosing, I am still considered anarchist.

The Amish live in a very peaceful theocracy, that dictates according to their religious beliefs that they have nothing to do with the outside world and its modern conveniences. It works for them because everyone believes the exact same thing. They are not taught that they must impose their beliefs on the rest of society and most likely believe they are the chosen people.

It is just a theory based on living very close to and interacting from time to time with an Amish community.

my ex went and stayed with amish people when she was a kid. i guess alot of them have tv's, but its strictly for adults, and they are tucked away, not out in the open like most would have them.

also, i saw on a show that amish kids get to go out into the real world @ 16 and sew their wild oats i guess. they basically get to see whats out there and decide for themselves if the amish life is for them, and i was really suprised when i heard something like 80% return to amish life.

Funny enough, I saw a large group of Amish kids in downtown Chicago last year at the Adler PLanetarium and the Shedd Aquarium. They were riding elevators and getting on and off of busses. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I did a little research when I got home and asked around. It looks like that's what these kids were doing. They were off on their little trip into the real world.

update:

O'Reilly had a small segment on them tonight. Mike Gallagher was kind of enough to strike a deal with these people; he'd give them an hr on his show in exchange for going to the funerals of these girls. Basically they are just attention whores.

They had signs ready that read "your daughters are all whores" and "your daughters are burning in hell right now".

So they were at the funeral?

I'm glad that the media coverage I saw didn't give them any airtime.

No, they weren't there; in exchange for not going, Mike Gallagher gave them 1 hr airtime on his radio show, which he put on at the time of the funeral.
