they are being harmed because half of their work is being taken by the government, they could use the money elsewhere.

You can make that arguement, but it really is only one one of looking at it.

I don't really support progressive income tax for a number of reasons, but saying they have less "protection" of property can be dismissed because they equal protection under the law as anyone else making that same money.

it is clear that the founders didn't believe in equal protection in exactly that way, since the original taxes were excise taxes on booze etc.

though they did tax things they believed were pretty universally purchased by both poor and wealthy alike
