There has never been any evidence of banning guns and reducing violent crime.

The UK banned all guns, yet the murder rate actually climbed after years of a consistent declines and it continues to increase.

They've stopped dealing with the police statistics because it makes them look bad. They rely on government surveys now which for some reason paint a different story.

What?!?!

They had gun crime. Guns were made illegal to have. Gun crime CONTINUED TO INCREASE.

WTF is that if not a stellar reason to bring legal gun ownership BACK!

How do you know that if they had not banned guns, gun crimes would've not continued to increase even more than with the gun ban? In other words, gun crimes were going to increase no matter what, but the ban slowed down the increase. Or maybe gun crimes were going to increase just as they have completely irrespective of gun laws. Maybe trends in gun crime have nothing whatsoever to do with gun laws.

Your argument reminds me of this:

It's fascist to regulate things which serve no useful purpose and potentially could cause lots of harm? Okay...

I'll agree if you're in a rural area, but in urban Chicago? What are you going to do? Shoot pigeons and rats off the sides of buildings?

This may be the single most stupid argument I've ever seen. I really don't know how to reply to it. If there's anyone out there who can translate from "dumbass" to "rational" please let me know how to reply.

You're making the age old mistake of taking correlation to mean causation, and you're calling me a dumbass.

1. I didn't call you a dumbass, I said that argument is dumb. That argument could also be used for "Little billy fell and hit his head and now has a brain injury. But we can't be sure hitting the ground caused it, he might have spontaneously developed a brain injury on the way down!"

2. chicago had gun crime
chicago banned guns
chicago gun crime is still increasing
...............................................IT DIDN'T WORK!

Wow...I'm left speechless that you consider the above a good analogy. I suppose I'll have to spell it out for you...

In the case of a guy falling, hitting his head, and then getting a brain injury, the odds are infinitesimal that it was anything other than the fall that caused the injury. There aren't many variables at work in that situation. You simply have the guy, the fall, and the brain injury...not a whole lot to consider. People don't normally have brain injuries unless something happens, and it's clear something happened here. Thus, causation is clear.

The difference you don't seem to grasp is that, unlike brain injuries, gun crimes do go up and down for no explicable reason. It could be noise with no significance, or it could be caused by one of many variables we'll never know about. Crimes rates fluctuate for a variety of reasons. You can have fluctuations in gun crime when there is no legislative change at all. You're taking a leap of faith to say a law caused whatever increase you're referring to.

When you boil it down, you're committing a classic case of mistaking correlation for causation. If you still don't understand why your argument is retarded, try a little light reading:

Correlation implies causation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Talk about noise..........NONE OF THIS MATTERS.

I'll say it again. What matters is they made the strict gun law with the intent to reduce gun crime. Gun crime did not decrease, gun crime didn't level out... gun crime continued to increase. If you can't see that their "no guns" policy isn't working then there's nothing else to say.

You don't know that the gun law didn't work. Although gun crimes still increased after the law, it's possible the law slowed down the increase from what would've been an even steeper increase without the law.

Can we say the same about areas that don't have those gun laws and gun crime doesn't decrease?

More guns = less crime, and here's a write-up on the book that shows it.

Forecasts & Strategies :: Chicago Gun Show by Mark Skousen

Lott analyzed the FBI's massive yearly crime statistics for all 3,054 U.S. counties over 18 years, the largest national surveys on gun ownership, and state police documents on illegal gun use. His surprising conclusions, published in his recent book, More Guns, Less Crime:
  • States now experiencing the largest drop in crime are also the ones with the fastest-growing rates of gun ownership.
  • The Brady five-day waiting period, gun buy-back programs, and background checks have little or no impact on crime reduction.
  • States that have recently allowed concealed weapon permits have witnessed signif- icant reductions in violent crime.
  • Guns are used on average five times more frequently in self-defense than in committing a crime.(2)
  • According to Lott, recent legislative efforts to restrict gun ownership may actually keep many law-abiding citizens from protecting themselves from attack.
