Carlson: Republican Party has "Contempt for Evangelicals"

CARLSON: It goes deeper than that though. The deep truth is that the elites in the Republican Party have pure contempt for the evangelicals who put their party in power. Everybody in…
MATTHEWS: How do you know that? How do you know that?
CARLSON: Because I know them. Because I grew up with them. Because I live with them. They live on my street. Because I live in Washington, and I know that everybody in our world has contempt for the evangelicals. And the evangelicals know that, and they're beginning to learn that their own leaders sort of look askance at them and don't share their values.
MATTHEWS: So this gay marriage issue and other issues related to the gay lifestyle are simply tools to get elected?
CARLSON: That's exactly right. It's pandering to the base in the most cynical way, and the base is beginning to figure it out

i'm glad some are finally beginning to figure it out... took em long enough though

Unless things have changed, last I heard most people are against Gay marriage anyway. Hasn't it failed in every ballot initiative so far?

I just don't see this as a Hard Right Evangelical issue when most people still don't want it (that being said I am not against it as long as there are limits which I have discussed before).

funny how the republicans had all 3 branches of government, yet they didn't really do much about abortion.

looks like they still need things to "fight for" in the future

I guess that proves they were "pandering" to the evangelicals, right?

This is why I hate Republicans. They control the government, yet do nothing for conservatism.

It depends on how the question is asked. If you ask " should marriage be between a man and a woman? " Most people say yes.

The problem is if you ask the question differently, "whether we should afford the same rights to gays as we do to straight people as it pertains to the contract of marriage," again a majority of people say yes.

It would seem contradictory but it's not. Simply because marriage SHOULD be between a man and a woman does not preclude you from allowing it in other places. There are alot of other things that a marriage should be that you can't and should not legislate. A marriage should be "till death do us part" but you can't make people stay together. A marriage should be a union of two people who love each other, however you can't prevent people from marrying for money. Etc.

So when you ask people what it should be, it's different than saying whether or not we should withhold rights from a particular group.

I think that as well. But every ballot initiative in the US so far (I think - maybe Mass. passed one?) has been against it.

Phantom is a jewel in the rough

It seems to me most politicians have contempt for their voters.

I don't think most democrats believe the minimum wage will help anyone, but they pander to their electorate and get the will of their people and lobby for it anyway.

As long as the politicians are doing what the electorate wants, what does it matter if the politician "likes" the people who put them into power? I don't think it should matter.

It's been blatently obvious that the GOP has been simply using the evangelical's desire to force our society to live under their antiquated dogma for political gain for years..

Maybe they'll start to catch on and not show up to vote. That would be better for everyone, except them.

What a minute, I thought the GOP hasn't been doing what the evangelicals wanted, makingi empty promises to get their votes. But you're claiming that the GOP has been using the evangelicals desires to force us to live 'under their antiquated dogma'...

Evangelicals have a desire to force our society to live a certain way. They know they can only accomplish this through legislation.

As such, they have essentially bonded with the Republican party because of their 'conservative' view of how social issues should be handled, and lobbied them to do their bidding as it relates to social issues. Abortion, gay marriage, etc, etc..

Republicans saw this as an untapped resource when it comes to the voting booth, and made promises designed to get them out to vote for them.. and it succeeded, delivering them the votes where it counted.

However, despite promising to do this or that in exchange for votes, support, etc.. they have not delivered on their promises.

I'm not sure where your question is
