The joke was about Sara Palin's outing with her daughter to Yankee stadium and her daughter having sex with a baseball player. The only daughter she took to Yankee Stadium was 14. We can argue semantics all we want, but even the left took his joke as being what it is. Now that he's come out and claimed he was talking about someone who wasn't even there everyone is jumping to his defense simply because they don't like Sara Palin.

"The Palins have no intention of providing a rating's boost for David Letterman by appearing on the show. Plus, it would be wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman. "

Keep Willow away from David Letterman? That means what exactly? He's going to rape her? Interesting. Oh, but I am sure this means nothing...just a joke or something.

It means it would be wise to keep a teenage girl away from a stranger who makes public jokes about her being raped. I think any responsible parent would feel the same way.

Read the joke again. The joke was about the daughter that went to the NYY game. And that daughter was 14.

But the joke was about A-Rod having sex with her 18 year old. WHO was at the game or whether there was a game at all is completely irrelevant. It's amazing that all jokes now have to have NOTHING but fact in them.

Why did the chicken cross the road?

Well...the chicken needed to eat...and the farm where he lived was across the road...so he figured his best shot at a meal was to get back over to the other side of the road. All of this is instinct because the chicken didn't really "know" his food was over there.

It is reasonable that when you mention the person who went to the ball game, that you people assume it is the person who went to the ball game.

If you can't understand why people got upset, then you have no clue. Children of celebrities should be off limits for crude humor.

It's funny because you were also making an assumption...

Anyone who knew which daughter went to the game, would probably have that daughter in mind. It is more reasonable that Palin assumes he was talking about the daughter who went to the game when he brings up the daughter who went to the game.

Obviously, Letterman has issued a mea culpa for iding the wrong daughter. Palin wants to keep doing tv appearences, though, doesn't she?

I have a feeling that if a democrat's daughters were the butt of such a joke, the people defending her here would be reversed. That is the hypocrisy that heavily exists in this forum.

You show me an abstinence-only dem and they'll be laughed out of the party before their kids can get knocked-up.

Lettermans original statement was terrible. And if you watch it it's even worse. He didn't mean what he said at all and never did say he was sorry for it. But now he took it seriously. I'm glad he finally got over his politics and man'd up to his mistake.

It was "a coarse joke," "a bad joke," Letterman told viewers. "But I never thought it was (about) anybody other than the older daughter, and before the show, I checked to make sure, in fact, that she is of legal age, 18."

"The joke, really, in and of itself, can't be defended," he declared.

"I'm wondering, 'Well, what can I do to help people understand that I would never make a joke like this?' I've never made jokes like this, as long as we've been on the air, 30 long years."

If that's the misconception -- that the joke was aimed at a 14-year-old -- he understands why people are upset, he said. "I would be upset myself." Letterman has said from the beginning that he thought the Palin daughter who attended the Yankee game was Bristol.

"I feel that I need to do the right thing here and apologize for having told that joke," he said. "It's not your fault that it was misunderstood, it's my fault that it was misunderstood."

He apologized to both daughters, "and also to the Governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke," he said as the studio audience applauded. "I'm sorry about it, and I'll try to do better in the future."

But the bottom line is that it was misunderstood.
He was not talking about the fucking 14 year old and the faux outrage coming from the right has been delicious.

Of course he was. Again, on that show (that I watched because Stern was on) he mentioned Bush once, Limbaugh twice and Palin a few more times. He never once made a crack at a Democrat. So yes, his whole show he was showing his politics.
