| I've decided to give up criticism of Foley After some thought, I kinda feel bad for the guy. I am not trying to call people bigoted, but I think naturally this got blown up because it was a male 17 year old. Frankly, I was browsing the main forum over at off topic, and there was a thread that said hot jailbait. I clicked it. As would most other honest guys. Fact: If it had been a 17 year old girl he was im'ing, no one would really care. Our senses are appalled though at the thought of a younger man being talked dirty to by an older man. And the whole, people might have known he was having sex chat online with underage males. Any one of us would have shook his head and went down the hall to tell jokes about it. This is not to excuse soliciting sex with a minor, if this had occured, or if a minor had been exploited for pornography, it would be a different issue. I still think most of the defense (and attack) on the issue has come along party lines. Which says fairly disgusting things about partisan politics. | ||||

| You don't think it makes it a little worse that he was the Chairman for the house committee on missing and exploited children? And i'm less concerned with Foley than I am with the Coverup surrounding it. | ||||

Just that it is roll your eyes, shake your head wrong.

| I actually agree with the thread starter. I think that the reason why there is such Hub is because he was in contact with a "boy", which I don't consider a boy myself. I think if it would have been a 17 year old girl, it wouldn't be nearly as big of a deal. I don't care about any politicians sex life. Sex isn't as black and white as who you have sex with, and I think it's too bad that this country hasn't realized that yet. Sexuality comes in all different forms, attractions, desire, and fantasy, and just because he likes men on the younger side, that doesn't mean that he's a pedophile. The Kinsey report found that 46% of their male subjects in their sample have had a "reaction" to members of both sexes in the course of their adult lives, and 37% have had one homosexual experience in their life time. The report also found that 50% of married males engage in extra marital sex once in their lifetime. And this study was done is one of the most conservative ages of our country. The fact is, is that Politicians are human, and they are allowed to be sexual. He just got caught being sexual in a way that's unpopular and out of fashion right now. | ||||

| I was sick of this story the day pedophilia was no longer an issue. I dont think it bodes well for homosexuals that he was in a position of power and then acted like a kid in a candy shop. I dont know how many times since then that I have heard so called intelligent people say that "gay men are more likely to be pedophiles than straight men". His actions fed into that bullshit and further incited condemnation of gays. His actions were reprehensible as far as Im concerned but so are the actions of many others. | ||||

| If he were an average Joe, I'd say it wasn't that big of a deal either. But he was a politician and is supposed to set the right example. Now he needs to be made an example of. I don't feel sorry for him. He knew the consequences of his actions and he deserves everything he's getting. | ||||

| Clean up your own back yard. "I know the speaker didn't go over a bridge and leave a young person in the water, and then have a press conference the next day," said Shays, R-4th District, referring to the 1969 incident in which the Massachusetts Democrat drove a car that plunged into the water and a young campaign worker died. "Dennis Hastert didn't kill anybody," he added. | ||||

And I don't necessarily agree that there's a gene for it. I think it's mostly a choice, personally, but that other thread was talking about the prospect of it being a gene, so I joined in teh discussion by saying 'then we can fix it with gene therapy'. That is all.

| I don't feel sorry for him either because he knew that his behavior was inappropriate -- as evidenced by passing laws which might ultimately be used to prosecute him. I don't feel sorry for anyone who abuses their position of power to do something illegal and then gets caught doing it. | ||||

| I don't really know how it would require a coverup. Perhaps they were just not concerned about their associate sending e-mails to teen boys. I wouldn't have been concerned enough to do anything if their was no solicitation of sex. | ||||
