Prostate cancer breakthrough

Two patients with inoperable prostate cancer have made dramatic recoveries after receiving one dose of an experimental drug that is creating excitement among cancer specialists.

The results were so startling that researchers decided to release details of the two cases before the drug trial – in which the patients took part – was complete. Doctors said their progress had exceeded all expectations. The men were treated at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota in the US, one of the top medical centres in the world.

Dr Eugene Kwon, the urologist who was in charge of their treatment, compared the results to the first pilot breaking the sound barrier.
"This is one of the Holy Grails of prostate cancer research. We have been looking for this for years," he said.
By Jeremy Laurance, Health editor

Though if you have the disease don't get your hopes up. It will probably take years before the FDA allows it's usage. Our research is top notch though it's a shame our regulations will allow men to die while we wait for the FDA to determine it's effectiveness and side effects.

And while I'm glad we put a stop to snake oil salesmen, or at least most of them, I still think the FDA should allow people to use experimental drugs when they are fighting for their life.

Excellent find. It's good to see the US health care and medical research industry is still making this incredible breakthroughs. Hopefully they can use some of this research to assist in other forms of cancer.

I think the FDA should not be allowed to manage drugs, they should basically drop the D part.

Why should they be allowed to manage food?

ya, I know they don't do a particularly good job of managing food either, that will have to be fixed. In all honesty though, I just don't trust ppl to not re-mix up the hamburger after it turns brown so that it looks red again. Some ppl could eat e-coli tainted meat all day and be fine, but not everyone, and if the FDA (or FA, or whatever) simply did the job it was created for and not just bend over all day for the chemical manufacturers loading everything we eat up with sodium guanalate and ester of wood rosin, I think it could still do less harm than good.

Unless you find it prudent to have an FDA inspector standing over the hamburger meat 24 hours a day in every supermarket, there isn't a way to prevent this. Of course, even then it doesn't prevent it because the FDA inspector himself could be bought off or lazy or stupid.

Regulation of food is just as important as regulation of drugs. It appears we're back to the whole drug issue here again.

In my view its a common sense thing. I wouldn't mind regulation of drugs if regulation meant keeping the e-coli out of the cough syrup (which is not very likely to happen, but possible as cough syrup often contains sugars, which can spoil), but as for the drugs themselves, I would tend to oppose it as a matter of legislating personal choice. Basically, if no one would knowingly choose it, food or drugs, then there shouldn't really be a problem. Now I know some would say that then the free market could handle it all and there wouldn't be a problem, but the thing about food is that, food spoils, and some ppl may be able to eat spoiled food just fine, but even by so doing so, they risk everyone they come in contact with by spreading disease.
