| Bush/Rove: 'Upbeat' - Newt: Repubs can turn this around! White House Upbeat About GOP Prospects - washingtonpost.com Amid widespread panic in the Republican establishment about the coming midterm elections, there are two people whose confidence about GOP prospects strikes even their closest allies as almost inexplicably upbeat: President Bush and his top political adviser, Karl Rove. Some Republicans on Capitol Hill are bracing for losses of 25 House seats or more. But party operatives say Rove is predicting that, at worst, Republicans will lose only 8 to 10 seats -- shy of the 15-seat threshold that would cede control to Democrats for the first time since the 1994 elections and probably hobble the balance of Bush's second term. In the Senate, Rove and associates believe, a Democratic victory would require the opposition to "run the table," as one official put it, to pick up the necessary six seats -- a prospect the White House seems to regard as nearly inconceivable. In a Free Society, Campaigns Matter: The GOP Must Give Voters a Clear Choice by Newt Gingrich - HUMAN EVENTS In a Free Society, Campaigns Matter: The GOP Must Give Voters a Clear Choice by Newt Gingrich Posted Oct 16, 2006 The elite media are giddy with anti-Republican euphoria. Their coverage has not been this biased against Republicans in three decades. The Democrats are excited and convinced they will win a big victory. Republicans are worried, demoralized and confused. I have been in eight states recently and the mood is similar everywhere. Yet, an election is a choice between two futures. By simply comparing the positions of each party based upon historic facts, the choice of the desired future will become clear to the majority of the American people. And that choice is neither one in which Democrats celebrate nor Republicans concede. __________________________________________________ ______________ Now the question will be how much Republican confidence and message play out in this election? I am not so much an optimist, but I have my doubts about the amount media negativity vs. reality? Many days to go and all clear bets are off! | ||||

| You know how in movies dying soldiers start to hallucinate and say things like, "I see a beautiful light! I'm walking towards it!" No punchline is needed here. | ||||

| I said it in another thread, but: This type of overconfidence in the face of all available evidence stems from 1 of 2 things. 1) Stupidity 2) Knowing what others do not. Rove isn't a stupid man when it comes to political races. If he's this confident, my question is what does he know that the rest of us do not? | ||||

| It seems like it's more than that, because generally it's known what the mood is behind doors, and senior aides in the White House say he's "almost inexplicibly" upbeat about it. This, while pretty much everyone who follows political races expect a very large shift in the political power in Congress. So, again, my question is still what does he know that the rest of us do not? | ||||

| I don't think he knows what he thinks he knows...remember this is a guy who almost lost to then total bore Gore by some 300 votes, then in 2004 almost lost to Kerry except 60,000 voters changed their minds... That doesn't strike me as someone who, while gifted at helping strategy, is a terribly good with getting the votes everywhere Check out this: PollReportPopup A Democrat, 8 points behind in a nonpartisan poll...nothing to think about, right? Thats probably some Tossup or Lean Rep seat, right? Wrong, its so solidly Republican it doesn't make Hotline's top 60 races, or Charlie Cook's 60 vulnerable GOP seat list, to all the political experts, that seat is so gerrymandered and Republican that there was, yesterday virtually NO CHANCE the seat was in play No new scandals, or information...just a poll from an unheard of race If Democrats can make a race close there, or jesus, win it...then we are looking at the possibility of picking up 40-50 seats That poll is the most damning thing ive seen yet | ||||
