I don't like Steele because I think he's put an insane amount of misinformation out there, and misleading the public in order to confuse them on who is a member of which party, etc, does a disservice to the public, but I don't see what race has to do with it honestly.

Any Democrats participating in that should be ashamed of themselves. They can win on the issues, they don't need to stoop to this level.
Uncle Tom wasn't an evil person, who am I to tell a black democrat he can't call a black politician an Uncle Tom?

I don't really care if it's a black politician or white politician saying it. It's not constructive and only serves to further perpetuate racism. I think you can oppose it on moral and ethical rounds easily without the race of the person saying it mattering one bit.

I believe if a black man is calling another black man an Uncle Tom, it is not racism...

Did anyone actually ever read the book? Am I the only one here?

I'll take that as a no, you haven't read the book, someone just told you Uncle Tom is an offensive term so no one can ever use it

If you understood the character, you'd realize that in this anti-slavery book, Uncle Tom is not an evil person, or an evil character, etc

The way you guys are talking, its like calling a black american Uncle Tom is the same as calling a russian Stalin

What misinformation has he put out there thats been over the top? I haven't seen a political race that doesn't use misinformation or incomplete information. Granted I dont think its right but if both people are doing it then its wrong to criticize steele for using misinformation while ignoring it when competition does it.

Jesus fuck. I have read the fucking book.

Apparently you can't understand the context of how it is used or why it is used. it is being used as a term to put him down based ONLY on his race. that is RACIST. i don't care how you want to paint it in your mind. it was clearly used as a pejorative to discredit him on one thing alone.

Go start calling any successful black an Uncle Tom and see how racist they think it is.

We had this conversation in my leadership class last week.

I've been in bars in Philly and had black guys call Steele an "Uncle Tom" and I smiled and nodded to be polite

The term was being used to put him down because he is using a strategy that, while understandable in the 19th century, is unacceptable in the 21st as a way to represent the black community

Speaking of Oreos, they threw Oreos at him while he was speaking once. And the Democratic camp against him admits to eating Oreos in the waiting rooms before debates and appearances and making jokes about eating up the competition and stuff.

How is starting from nothing, putting yourself through school, starting a family not a good way to represent the black community?

I would love to know.

How is being a self made success not something good for the black community?
