That is something a non-black person I don't think can ever do, but a black person...I think its murky

When did libertarians and conservatives become so PC? The fake outrage in this thread is so overpowering...

Nothing fake here my friend. Keep the blinders on if you have to, but the world is a lot clearer place without them.

In common bar room speech I'm sure Uncle Tom by a black person about another isn't as bad. However, politicians and campaigners are not using "bar room speech", everything they say is a soundbite. And when whites and such use it, it's clearly racist beyond any imagination. Try walking up to a black person and say "Hey nigger, you got a light" and see what his reaction is. Or try going to a political meeting and say "This nigger..." etc when referring to a black politician. Even if a black person were to call him a nigger in a formal setting, it would be considered racist. Imagine if Al Sharpton got on stage and called him a nigger. Beyond nigger, try walking into business run by a black and call him an Uncle Tom or house nigger and see his reaction. It's racist and it is perceived as such.

Calling him an Uncle Tom in the context it was presented clearly has racist intentions.

Because that is not the issue

How is being a Buddhist not a good way to represent the black community?

Having a family and going to school is not the issue here, but if he sides with George Bush, and 95% of american blacks disapprove of Bush's positions (literally) isn't that a point...who is he representing?

No, he was called an Uncle Tom because like the book Uncle Tom, he is against slavery

It is good for the black community but it doesn't fit with agenda of the DNC of play the race/victim card so they bash him.

And where is this proof he is siding with Bush? He disagrees with the governor of maryland on a multitude of issues.

and i fail to see how a personal success doesn't fit the agenda of the black community. if anything he is a shining success.

See, here there is a difference...calling someone a nigger, saying an orea...its clear cut symbols...especially nigger...thats a term for hundreds of years was used to demean blacks and by the KKK as they lynched blacks

Uncle Tom is far removed from that category

There's a video playing in Maryland of Steele saying he sides with Bush, I don't have the youtube link on me right now

again, personal success has nothing to do with this

What?!?!?!?

One of my best friends is a black guy that does very well, one of his most frustrating things he's encountered is how some of his friends and even some in his family said he was becoming an "uncle tom" simply because he studied his ass off in college and now has a good job. It's clearly racist and extremely frustrating for those that do a good job and are successful in their lives.

Now what would cause this? Are they threatened by his success? Do they think him working so hard makes the rest of them (or maybe the community) look bad?

What does him agreeing with Bush have anything to do with him being an Uncle Tom? We haven't had a black president in the history of the US. So are you saying that any black person agreeing with Bush on any issue is an Uncle Tom or are you saying any black person agreeing with Republicans on any issue is an Uncle Tom.

This is the mindset that has set back the black community and hurt them in politics. Democrats use them and have convinced so many people of their crap.

I am not reading all of the replies but i can tell you the shit against Steele is not racism. Lets call a spade a spade.. i mean he is an attempt to draw more black voters to the republican party, when they do not represent the black folks best interests. There are as many black republicans are there are black people on the swim team. Most dont like swimming and republicans are not going to represent most of their views.

i couldnt resist the "blatent rascism"

Oh really?

Why is it the first black to be put on the governor ticket was done so by a republican candidate? This after democratic control of the state for over some 40 years? Now they are forced to because of Erlich picking Steele as his running mate. Ironing.

I fail to see how he is not a valid candidate even though he is black. It is pretty sad that you disqualify him based on his race.
