Bush urged to enforce Voting Rights Act

Bush urged to enforce Voting Rights Act (AP)

AP - Civil rights leaders said Thursday that President Bush's signature to extend the 1960s civil rights law against racist voting practices will be just a footnote in history if the government fails to enforce it.

Someone explain to me why this needs to be renewed... I mean, at this point it almost seems excessive. If the act goes unsigned, will the KKK people suddenly pop out of the shadows and say "finally! we can keep the blacks from voting! We've waited 40 long years!"

A better question is if this act isn't signed, would it be legal for polling places to say "No (insert group here) allowed"?

No, because not only of the 18th amendment, but because in the rest of the constitution, it also doesn't designate race... therefore, it's all redundant at this point. We know that black people, etc... aren't inferior... they're people like the rest of us.

I think the reason why he passed it was because so many were saying that voting stuff should be in English only...and they don't want counties to start "discriminating" against people who need their voting stuff in other languages.

In 1982, it was extended, does someone want to explain to me how much better race relations are today than in 1982?
