McCain would rather "commit suicide" than have the Democrats control the Senate

"I think I'd just commit suicide." -- Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), quote by Radio Iowa, on what he would do if Democrats take control of the U.S. Senate.

Political Wire: Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

Such a nice, bipartisan man

Boy, he sure is different than all those firebrand republicans!

You know what is hilarious, that Steven Colbert made a joke at the WH dinner "Look me up when you go to speak at Bob Jones" at nice shot because Bush did that, smeared McCain and won the primary by being outrageously conservative...now McCain is planning on speaking at Bob Jones University

What a sellout...he'll do anything to get the 08 presidential nod, if he hasn't sold his soul already

Lets try some context from the link of your link:

"I think I'd just commit suicide," McCain said, as the Republicans standing beside him burst into laughter. "I don't want to face that eventuality because I don't think it's going to happen...I think it's going to be tough, but I think we'll do o.k." A few moments later McCain turned to Congressman Latham and joked that Latham would probably commit suicide first, as polls suggest control of the House is likely to swing to Democrats in this year's election.

It really is sad. He had quite a bit of credibility before.

The Senate is not the House, the GOP hasn't really put the screws to the Dem Senators since 1994, the Dems won't either...

It just shows what an angry partisan he is...Rick Santorum #2...no better than any other Senator

This thread comes to memory.
Did John Kerry threaten to kill the POTUS?

Interesting how your point of view changes so quickly.

Joe Lieberman, a "lifelong democrat" who is "really liberal" said he doesn't even know if he wants the Republicans to keep the house

McCain makes jokes about committing suicide

yet both men are labeled bipartisan

I guess bipartisan today means "Republican-supporter, preferably moderate"

The context is that he didn't go "oh you know I'd work with Feingold and other dems just find, have in the past, wouldn't be that bad"

No, he goes on about how "oh well....i dont think its gonna happen, new topic!!!"

thats the context

That's a good point and I agree with it.

The rest of this thread I could care less about. He was joking and I wouldn't care if he did. I don't think his suicide threats would stop the inevitable.

What about all those Hollywood Liberals who said they would leave the country if Bush were Re-Elected. They sounded quite serious, but damnit they are still here!

I agree he was joking. I agree that what he said was extreme in the sense of he was using that as a way to describe his feelings of the Democrats winning. But I think that there is truth in his joke for him. I think he, just like MANY Republicans would be ready to bow their heads and shake them when/if they loose the House, Senate, and the Presidency, we've had a domination for several years, and for them to see it go the other way is not something they are used to or have been for a while. So I won't be suprised if a Congressman wants to "slit his wrists", or "Cry himself to sleep" as a way of describing how they feel about their loss. It doesn't mean he'd actually do it, but there is some truth to his statement. He said it to be funny about his potential dissappointment.

Not from McCain, but from other people I've heard:

-shoot me if that happens
-well go fuck a duck
-I'd rather be stabbed in the eye than....
-well kick me in the spleen and call me sally

and my fav

-If Bush wins I'll leave the country

I don't think any of those people *actually* meant them, either. Maybe it was just a matter of saying something off the cuff and doesn't mean he'd kill himself or has any disrespect for people who choose to.

This thread is pathetic.
