| What will Dems do with taxes Assuming Democrats take control of the House, what will they do about taxes. My guess is they will let the Bushtax cuts expire. Then they will offer a new round of tax cuts aimed at the middle class. The top 10% of wage earners will probably be taxed at the pre-Bush rates. Of course the Republicans will oppose this and caall it a tax increase. I see the final result as being something that keeps the 10% bracket and maybe expands the amount of income it applies to and a round of targeted tax cuts that would go towards the middle class, such as child care tax creditsand tuition tax credits. What do you think? | ||||

| I think that's probably a good asssessment of what they'd like to do, but the real question is whether or not Bush would veto such a plan. I think he would, honestly. I doubt there would be enough support of such a bill to override the veto, but maybe I'm wrong. Welcome to the forum | ||||

| I don't see democrats lowering taxes on anyone. And letting the Bush tax cuts expire IS a tax increase for the people it affects. | ||||

I've never understood that thinking. If tax cuts go away then that is clearly a tax increase. Democrats will raise taxes I have no doubt about it. However theparty isn't unified on who will pay this extra tax bill. Bush's tax cuts were aimed at everyone and EVERYONE got a tax cut so this notion that taxes weren't cut for the middle class is nothing more than stinky pooh. Welcome to the board

| I honestly don't know. Tax cuts are always popular no matter who you are. I don't think they could simply let the cuts expire without enacting some other sort of tax cut. If the Dems took over congress and immediately raised taxes, I think in another 2 years they would be voted back out again. | ||||

| I agree, they will let the Bush cuts expire, but I doubt they will offer the middle class any cuts. In fact, they will likely increase taxes even higher, using the 'Bush spending' as an excuse to raise taxes to levels higher than before the Bush tax cuts. They will then attempt to increase funding in education (doesn't work anyway), healthcare, and entitlement programs. Their spending will be just as out of control as Bush's, except we will be taxed out the ass, and they will have justified their actions to the American people somehow. | ||||

| Have Democrats ever been for tax cuts? If this is the case, the Republicans and Democrats are doing the ole switcharoo. | ||||

| Yes. But they are generally targeted at the lower and middle classes whereas the GOP tax cuts are typically one size fits all without regard to where the cuts are really needed. | ||||

| That is a fundamental difference between our viewpoints. I don't think that we should give tax cuts to people who earn 200k a year. They don't need it and it won't help them. I am of the opinion that with a national debt as big as ours and a deficit as big as ours, it is iresponsible to give tax cuts to people who don't need them. But we both know full well we aren't going to convince each other to come over to the other side on this one. | ||||

| I'm not sure anyone knows for sure right now. There are so many different ideas in the party on what to do. I have the feeling they will let the tax cuts expire or repeal them, but only for people who earn over a certain amount. This no tax and spend situation going on can't last and honestly, I think voters have bigger concerns than taxes right now. | ||||

| I believe there was a time in history when we did spend within our means and even pay down the national debt. And I think it was the "tax and spend" democrats that did it, not the "fiscally conservative republicans" if memory serves...... | ||||

As far as their tax plan they will come up with their own that keeps anyone earning less than 200k where they are today. Those earning 200k or more will go to clinton era levels.

| I am sure there are a lot of programs that, if restructured to run more efficient, would save tons of money and provide the same level of service. They also need to restructure some programs to prevent abuse and corruption. I am sure they could save billions on that kind of thing alone. | ||||
