No. It has nothing to do with social responsibility. It has to do with definitions of what a human being is.

What about companies that dump toxic waste into rivers so they don't have to pay for removal?? Don't they have a social responsibility not to poison people to make a quick buck?
If they were hurting people, with all the mediums that we have now (news, interent, etc), people would be boycotting the business.

true. but we're not legislating at those low levels of social responsibility.

After how many years when they find out? It's not like they advertise the fact.

And you are making the assumption that most people are informed or give a shit. I think history has shown that's not the case.

See? You and them have different belief systems. They believe that it is. You don't. Disagreement.

That's what happens now with the EPA, FDA, etc. So, I don't see how it's any different.

What if they're going out of business anyway? There has to be some sort of punishment.

This leads into one of the things I think the gov't should be responsible for... collecting information.

In 1910, the Beurau of Mines was created to do JUST that... no police-style regulation, just straight up information. Because of this, worker fatalities and injuries dropped through the floor.

When people KNOW what is going on, then they take actions to prevent it.

And if I want to call a squirrel a cupcake? What don't that have to do with social responsibility other than the fact that my friends will laugh at me in public?

I don't necessarily disagree with that, but for the most part, I really don't like police-style regulation

At least they provide some sort of deterrent beyond a loss of business.

Not without environmental protection laws which enforce a "social responsibility".

You were saying that a differance of definition is a social responsibility problem.

Endangering lives

Like I said, it's a turnkey operation... no self-respecting judge would, given America's current state of envio-consciousness, let them off the hook
