Political Trivia for Oct. 23

CQPolitics.com - Staten Island is the only borough of New York City that is at all friendly to Republicans. It has only supported Democratic presidential candidates in three elections. Two of those years, 1964 and 1996, were years in which the Democratic candidate won handily. In which other election year, which featured a close race, did a Democrat come in first place among Staten Island voters?

1960
2004
2000
1976

Answer: 2000

Al Gore, the Democratic nominee in 2000, was supported by nearly 50 percent of Staten Island voters, while George W. Bush garnered only 44 percent of the borough's vote. Four years later, Bush won 57 percent of the vote in Staten Island, which had lost a large number of people in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
