| Messy Allen divorce file leaked, its over in VA, Democrats won Emails began pouring in earlier today about a rumor on Capitol Hill about some trouble in Sen. George Allen's (R-VA) divorce file. Josh Marshall and others cannot get a response from the Allen campaign. It seems everyone is emptying their opposition research files today. Update: A very reputable political reporter tells me this isn't from Democratic opposition research and that it's probably coming out because many feel Allen "crossed the line" when he started talking about Jim Webb's novels. I'm told divorce records are usually sealed for two reasons: (a) to protect kids, and (b) to protect large financial fortunes. Neither situation applies in Allen's case, so the suspicion is that it's something not very nice. Update II: A clue might be in this Ryan Lizza piece on Mark Warner about a story that had been "making the rounds" about a 2008 presidential contender who "once spit on his wife." That rumor was also about Allen. Political Wire: Buzz in Virginia me, im putting all my money in on Webb on intrade since he obviously just won the race This shows Allen's real character and obviously won't play well with VA voters | ||||

I like VA. I pick Allen, you pick Webb. If there is a winner picked election night or the day after, loser stays off for 14 days effective immediately? (this is prime election gloating/headhanging mind remember) If no winner is picked, say no concession from either candidate, we call it a tie?

Republicans set themselves up for that kind of criticism because they play the moral/religious/family values card all the time. That is what they stereotypically representing. It just seems hypocritical for someone to try and take the moral high ground with their religion/values/marriage when they are truly no better than the average person. But that is the card that works to get them elected... so thats why they face more criticism than democrats. Democrats do not typically approach those issues that way so they kind of sneak around it.

| When did all of a sudden democrats stop playing the moral and family values card? The only thing they rarely harp on is religion. I guess that exclusion makes it awesome to be a democrat politician, in which they can cheat, steal and screw anyone they want without setting themselves up for criticism? Setting Republicans on such a high pedestal just makes it sound like you're belittling the democrats as the party of immoral heathens. | ||||

A good majority of conservatives vote their wallets. Another sector of conservatives vote their moral values. Somewhere that sector of conservatives that are for smaller government seems to have disappeared. The marriage of the Moral Majority and the conservatives of the Republic Party in the 80's and the whole "clean up America campaign has created quite a quandry for those wallet voters. Although the wallet voters prefer as little government as possible, the moral voters want government to step in, put federal laws in place that restrict the rights of individuals and their lifestyles (not just gay), and have allowed massive amounts of money to be spent in order to support the views of the moral majority which will grow government. People who want to govern morallity based on a specific sector of the population but does not live that morallity themselves are complete hypocrits! The party, of conservatives, has set itself up for this kind of scrutiny and ridicule. They either need to move away from a political agenda that allows government to tell people how they have to live or they need to stop whinning when hypocrisy is exposed. If align yourself, for political gain and power, with a group that preaches and declares it should be so, then you better be walkin the walk and talkin the talk.
