Need advice on ring

So I am thinking about proposing. And am not looking to go broke in the process, but I don't want to do the whole buy a ring without a stone thing. I have found some online sights that seem reputable, primarily bluenile.com, but am leery about buying something that expensive online. Has anyone bought expensive jewelry online? How'd it come out?

not sure if this link will work for you, but thats what I am looking at.

I had my wife's ring made but I'd buy from a reputable place online if I had to do it again (there was no "online" when I bought it ).

Looking for advice? Be 11tybillion% sure that's the exact cut and setting she wants. I hated doing it but for a while before I proposed I engineered conversations about cut/setting. I asked her best friend what she'd want. I had a recently-engaged friend go out of her way to get near my (future) wife and have her comment on the ring, and follow it up with "what's your favorite cut/setting?" She never suspected, and I got exactly what she wanted.

Her ring is custom-made so i can't show that, but the diamonds are set in this way

I have friends who thought "ring is a ring" and bought a solitaire and found out years later she hated it but didn't want to "ruin" the proposal.

I think I know pretty well what she is into. I can't remember exactly what her ring size is, thats my biggest problem with keeping it a suprise.
she said she liked these at helzberg

This was one that I built online with a much bigger stone, .52 carrots instead of 3/8 th for the helzburg. For a little bit less- 1700 and change.

can only show 1 image apparently at a time, didn't know that

I think that scene7 site isn't allowing hotlinking

anyway, those rings look similar but one is princess (the square one) and the other two are round. Does she care? My wife hated round diamonds for engagement rings (apparently she doesn't mind buying a shitload of them for earrings and necklaces, though ). Every one of those people I had ask her what she wanted for a ring told me she said princess/square. Your woman might not care but it's worth figuring out.

Nice rings btw. My wife's last ring is square sapphire with diamond trillions. I'm not much for jewelery but sapphire + diamond looks nice, IMO. My wife also has that same band but with diamonds and rubies.... very nice.

Alright, here's the problem with buying a ring online...my father works in jewelry and has for years so I know quite a bit.

On that website...you can't choose your clarity, your color, etc as you would be able to if you were looking directly at the ring. They are asking you for shape and price range essentially. Photography can be very clever and can help to hide an imperfection.

Just know what you are doing is pretty permanent and you aren't going to be 100% sure about what's coming to your door. The site isn't the best, but isn't too shabby for this sort of business. Just hope your wife hasn't been reading up on her diamond buying.

As for the size, you can do one of two things. 1. Take one of her rings and bring it to a local jewelry store (any one) and they will be able to size it for you. 2. Go bigger. It is much easier to get a ring sized smaller than it is to get it sized bigger. A size 7 or 8 should be plenty big enough, especially for the ring finger. Most women have a ring finger sized between 4.5 and 6.

I would go to a local reputable jewler. You can often get really good prices that way. I don't know where you are located but Jewlers Row in Philly has some great stores and if you shop around a little you can get a good deal. Ask people you know where they bought thier rings. Talk to co workers or whatever.
