Blacks of Maryland tell Democrats "It's not gonna be like that no more"

LARGO, MD – Today, Michael Steele received the endorsement of former Prince George’s County Executive and Democrat Wayne Curry, five Democratic Prince George’s County Council members and several other Democratic community and business leaders at Infusions Tea Café in Largo.

Wayne Curry today said [remarks as delived], “This is obviously a historic occasion and I am very happy to be a part of it. I grew up in Prince George’s County. Michael Steele was born here…I am a lifelong Democrat and I am mindful that our emergence as a community has always come along with struggle and strife…this community has been seriously trivialized. We have been neglected, overlooked and disparaged in the sanctums of the Democratic Party…Prince George’s County has been geographically redlined and stratified. It is the place where there is more Democratic voting than any other place in Maryland…”

The [Democratic] party acts as though when they want our opinion they will give it to us. It’s not going to be like that no more.

“This occasion is special for those who have sacrificed here. We don’t need any TV celebrities to tell us about politics in Prince Georges County…this isn’t the first time we have charged up a hill.

The person to elect, who is most responsive to the things that will make our future brighter is Michael Steele…He is a good man with a good plan.”
It's quite interesting to see this. This isn't a very large group, but it's interesting to see so many blacks willing to go against the Democrats and speak out as if they've been disenfranchised and taken advantage of for votes.

Conservatives have made this claim for some time now, but black Democrats coming out now speaking against their party goes against what most people would have expected.

Democrats have defended calling Steele an Uncle Tom, throwing Oreos at him, racist minstrel photoshops, etc to infinity. It seems the black vote can't be taken for granted so easily when you trample on them for an entire election. This is good news and good for America to see average black citizens standing up for what they believe in and going against the status quo.

This could get interesting and I think that many in the black community are aware of whats going on and are beginning to take a stand.

The guys over at Kos shed the usual when a Democrat doesn't toe the party line:

Come idiots get the fuck over it. You had your chance in the primary and your candidate lost. These people should not be allowed to call themselves Democrats after this endorsement. Kick them out of the party.
Race has kept the country from being great, now it might keep it from escaping evil. As someone said above--fuck, fuck,... I'll add--shit-fuck!
These people would rather vote for a black person than stay loyal to their party. Imagine if the shoe was on the other foot, i.e., white candidate with white politicians turning against a black member of their own party...
They just don't get it. They think this is an issue of voting for your race. Unfortunately they're the only ones who have been making this into a race issue this campaign. And that's the point. The DNC has taken advantage of and abused the black vote during this senatorial campaign. Now it's biting them in the ass.

that is because the democrats view blacks only by the color of their skin

As more and more Blacks move into the middle class, own homes and businesses, have non-union or non-government jobs the more they will wake up and move out of the "victimhood" party.

It's true. Prince George's county is a more affluent African-American county. And they have a very large voter turnout. This could have great effects on the upcoming election. It could also have great effects on future elections if the Democrats don't change their mentality towards the African-American community.

As if the middle class is a total lock for Republicans...keeping the middle class placated is one of their biggest weaknesses.

So the 90% of blacks who voted for Democrats, they were all getting welfare?

Also, note to OP, I've heard this ever since I was born, I mean honestly, what group is going to say "you can take us for granted"

Liberals can be swayed to vote green, moderates swayed to vote republican, etc...EVERY group says "you can't take us for granted" and SOME outspoken blacks in particular said in 2000 and 2004 said that the Dems were taking them for granted, yet they voted overwhelming Democratic

Any chances of the GOP courting (a significant number of) the black vote went up in smoke over Katrina...not only because Bush didn't deliver, but because the GOP defended the situation as having nothing to do with race, and blacks simply don't believe that

And people on welfare don't vote anyway, so I don't see what your point is.

Then why do Democrats care so much about long lines at the polls of poorer districts? They don't vote anyway...
