You need to watch "Why we fight"
You don't think that within the past 60 years counts as "new?" Because I do.

I would put "new" in something like the last 5 years. As far as non-military people cooking, cleaning, etc for soldiers via government contract, i think it has been picking up steam since the 1980s.

Work soldiers used to do is now being paid for by the government to a 3rd party for a very, very large amount of money.

Yeah, surely we've all seen "Why We Fight" by now The point is, as far as the history of the nation is concerned, this phenomenon is fairly new. I say 50 years is new, but you're saying it's picked up speed in the past 25, which is extra new

The idea of a standing army is also fairly new then

as it has only been around after ww2.

Lol, the idea of it is VERY old... even our founding fathers talked against it. We've had them at various times throughout our history, but we haven't NOT had one since before WW2 (probably WW1ish).

It concerns me that people think one person is qualified to make such far ranging decisions with little oversight - especially when these decision are not made via rational and logical process but how the president "feels"

If you think that's how things are done in the government, then You can't simplify this in that way. It's just not how it's done, and you can't say it is.

I don't think that is how it is done, in fact I willing to bet the President gets mainpulated. I do think how the presidents "feels" does affect hsi decisions though.

What does concern me is the qualification of the people elected to run the country - they often refuse to take advice from experts and decide to run with a policy that has no valid backing.
