We call each other nigger. That's my point; just because you say it, it doesn'et mean you're racist. I have white friends, asian friends, and I have black friends. Using a term like that is racist.

And you don't have to say it in front of the people you are insulting either.

In recent history it was common to see "No Niggers Allowed".

It is racist, I dont care who says it. We still have another generation to go before that word and its implication becomes an historical memory. The majority of the babyboomers children will need to pass before this can become a word that used to mean something.

I still don't understand why it's okay for blacks to call each other Nigger. Excedpt for Chris Rock who says there are black people then there are niggers. And he means it as an insult too. So can he be called racist against his own people? Or is he a race traitor for doing that? After all, if something is offensive it shouldn't be used.

Context is the answer. Words do not always mean the exact same thing.

Where I live the word nigga or nigger is used by whites and blacks about as often as "dude" was in the early 90s. Doesn't necessarily make them racist, just makes them sound like like they're trying to be "ghetto". I personally don't use it at all, but almost all of my friends do in the syntax Ballz posted.

It's a shame the word has become so trivialized.

Surely not...sensitivity because I know it's a possibly inflammatory word. I won't use it until I know that the other person can take it in jest. For example, I've used it with black friends too, but only when they know I don't mean anything by it. It's like calling someone 'fag'.

It's a shame the word has become so trivialized.

I don't think it's a shame at all. It should be trivialized. There is no reason in the world that this word should hold any weight anymore. Slavery is over, racism is probably as infrequent as it will ever be, and this word means nothing anymore. It shouldn't. The more we make it bad, the worse it is.

It's like the word 'fuck'. It used to be a really bad word, but now it's used too frequently. Who the fuck cares?

what?!?! im a mexican, and i dont call up my friends and say "whats up you dirty mexican border jumper!! what are you doing tonight, eating some beans?" haha. like i can understand saying "hey, whats up fag!" or something along those lines, but using "ni**er just seems pretty strange. i dont think it makes you a racist, but it is a weird.

and the the fact that you wont say it to your black friends also makes it weird. i can just see you and your white friends hangin out at a party telling jokes or something "haha, good one! you are one funny nigger, nigger! *black friend walks in*....*crickets*....hey, tyrone, um, whats up, bro?" :rofl"

You have to realize there are still people, like Democratic Rep. Lewis, who peacefully marched during the 60s, were viciously beaten by state troopers who called him a "nigger" and then while lying in a pool of his own blood, unable to get up, a state trooper came back, called him a "nigger" again, and wrote him a ticket for marching without a permit and dropped it on him

This is not an isolated incident, and many Americans are still alive who remember lynchings that took place against "niggers" according to their white neighbors

It has nothing to do with Slavery. It has everything to do with Civil Rights and the Civil Rights movement. My generation remembers all to well how ugly the Civil Rights movement got as well as the generation before me. It is understandably easy for you not to be able to relate, but there are still millions of us who can. For the black children of my generation (you would be included in that generation) the civil rights movement is part of their heritage. As more time goes by, the word nigger will become more trivialized, but as much as we would like to think it so, there are those still alive that it strikes deep chords in their souls. Your children will probably be the generation that can truly begin trivialize this word. Right now their are those who think your free usage of it is rude and demeaning, otherwise you would be free to use it anytime and in the presence of anyone.
