The GOP Congress votes Paris Hilton $91 extra million dollars

Paris Hilton, who was set to receive $159 million dollars as her inheritance, will now receive $250 million dollars as her inheritance

As of now, the first $1 million of inheritance to every person is non-taxable, now it has been raised to $5 million

Imagine sections from "growing up Gotti" and the three kids, from a life of crime, those three kids can each get an inheritance of 4.9 million without one cent being taxed, and without working a day of their lives, thats just one of many examples

The new american dream: hope someone in your family marries someone rich and not work a god damn day of your life as you wait for them to die

Is this a "bush is giving money to the rich" thread? See, I can't figure out how this is "giving money to paris hilton" or gotti or whomever because that tax break applies to anyone who works hard enough to take advantage of it.

Be jealous of them if you want for being luck enough to have parents/grandparents who have a lot of money, but this isn't just for them. It may even reduce my taxes when my parents are gone

Jealous much?

edit: actually, I shoudl have said "works hard enough or is lucky enough" .... powerball winners didn't work too hard for the money they're going to pass to their kids so I guess I should have added that

It's not just "giving money to the rich"

it's giving 5 million, untaxable, to anyone who has a rich family member who dies suddenly, and then more with slashed tax rates

If someone wants to waste their fortune on some drunk, lazy family members, go ahead, but that I have to be taxed for buying a car so I can get to work, and they don't get taxed a cent for giving the local family drug addict 4.9 million when they could easily set up organizations that could use their wealth for any number of purposes, including drug rehab, and a 1 million to make sure their family members are never in the gutter

There are also the long term implications, if the ultra-rich hold on to the majority of wealth in this country, they can create basically a slave-class that is starved of funds because they have all the wealth locked up in banks, its bad economics too

It's what helped cause the Great Depression and we're going down that same road

the rich get richer and the poor get dying

It's a bullshit subject.

This has nothing to do with paris or gotti or any of them. It's a (not so) veiled attack on people who inherit money the "don't deserve".... so paris didn't work too hard for her inheritance...her money. Like I said, powerball winners don't work too hard for their money, either. Should that be taxed at a higher rate? Bill Gates no longer works very hard for his money. Should that be taxed at a higher rate?

There shouldn't even *be* a death tax so why are people complaining that the ceiling was raised from $1M to $5M? Go out and earn or win your* millions and maybe your* tune will change just a bit.

right......if the rich don't give their money away it should be taxed because they can afford it.

I think I'm clear where you're coming from.

You aren't taxed for dying, you are taxed for holding a multi-million or multi-billion estate you refuse to do anything for except pass directly to relatives

Oh, those poor souls who have to get by with only 5 million! Your heart must go out to them. God forbid the ultra-wealthy actually set up foundations to advance causes they believe in (say even the GOP's political allies) or charity or any number of things.

No, lets lock up more and more of our wealth in banks so that the economy slows the rich control the wealth like french nobles controlled the serfs

"give away"

I really doubt if I spent my fortune on a huge statue dedicated to me, a political organization that would advance every single view I held in life, and all sorts of other activities, I'd be "giving away" my money in any charitable sense

Unless you want to be ultra-liberal about the word giving away, in that sense they are simply "giving away" their money to lucky relatives who did jack crap

So I should be able to give my friend million of dollars without paying any taxes on that too, right?

In that case my employeer should be able to give me money without paying taxes on it as well.

And that's bad? Why isn't this posted in the wealth redistribution thread because that's exactly what you're proposing. You want the rich to either spend it or give it to the govt......... there's a word for "we'll take it if we dont' like what you choose to do with it" but it's slipping my mind right now.
Oh, those poor souls who have to get by with only 5 million! Your heart must go out to them. God forbid the ultra-wealthy actually set up foundations to advance causes they believe in (say even the GOP's political allies) or charity or any number of things.
See above.

In theory I'm not sure, but in reality there is not a limited amount of money... this isn't monopoly where one person can "end up with all the money." You want as much as paris? Go out and earn it or win powerball or kill a rich uncle. You want to keep it in a mattress and give it to your kids when you die? Why shouldn't you be able to do that? You hiding that money in a mattress does *NOT* mean there's less money for the rest of us.

Again, they can tax me buying a playstation 3, they can tax me earning below the median salary, they can tax me on tons of other issues

But if I have tens of millions and want to give it to random people to horde, no tax

The rich get these huge estate tax gifts and loopholes, the average middle guy gets screwed with taxes

I think right now the limit is $12,000...you don't get taxed on the first $12,000 of your check anyway.

Sounds to me like "the average guy" is jealous that he doesn't have a lot of money.

Then why is their limit 5 million?

Because they are rich?

It's wealth redistribution as long as we have a progressive tax system, which the GOP is not trying to change

Ofcourse, lets not help the middle man, lets help the ultra-rich, bravo

Before we go off throwing an extra 91 million to paris who will already have over 100 million, why don't we focus on helping the middle class?

Maybe this bill, some far day down the road, could have some positive aspect, but not today, and that you can sit here and applaud the GOP giving huge loopholes those with billions while screwing over the middle class...

the "average guy" is jealous that he doesn't have the money to bribe congress for this kind of bullshit, he can bribe a congressman a few million and get tens of millions in return

Where is that ability for me? Can I donate 10,000 to my congressman and get 100,000 back in tax cuts if I make 50,000 a year?
