Outsourcing medical care

Businesses may move health care overseas - Yahoo! News

Wow, I always thought two professions that would be permanently immune from outsourcing would be law and medicine. Apparently I was wrong. Medicine can be outsourced.

John, you need a double bypass. We are booking your airfare to Abudabi because Dr. Ganish will do it for 500 dollars wher as it will cost 20 grand here in the states and your insurance company won't pay.

Canada could probably use the supplimental income. They are cheaper than here and can use the money for their own citizens.

Exactly. When your options are no medical care vs. overseas medical care, you do what you have to do. And besides, I'm sure they've got some great doctors overseas that can be found with some research.

Alot of them get thier educations somewhere else and then come over here to practice medicine anyway.

Man, what will this do to the already bad environment for doctors here? Wait...actually, I thought for a sec that it might lead to a doctor shortage, but that's probably not the case. I we run a doctor shortage, the American medical schools will just start admitting more foreign applicants and/or immigration will start letting more foreign doctors in, who can start practicing after passing a test.

Yeah, I know...no one talks about it, but I know plenty of people who couldn't get into American med schools, so they went to places in the Carribean or in Mexico. Thing thing about doctors is that no one ever asks where they went to school. Everyone assumes an MD is an MD, which is probably true, given I've never heard about a rash of dead patients due to foreign-educated doctors.

The American medical school system is sort of retarded. The vast majority of doctors never use chemistry, physics, calculus, etc., yet you have to be an expert in those subjects to get into American med schools. There seems to be just a set of arbitrary hurdles to keep the supply of doctors here low.

Canadians can't get into their own doctors so they come to the states to get treated. They can't handle what they have.

Can you back this up with evidence? There's a lot of urban legend surrounding alleged waiting lists.

In Canada, every citizen has coverage, but access can still be a problem. Reports show that millions of Canadians do not have, or have trouble finding a doctor, and have to rely on emergency room treatments. [1] Complaints of long waiting lists for some services are also common. For example, in a survey of hospital administrators conducted in Canada, the United States, and three other countries, 21 percent of Canadian hospital administrators admitted that it would take over three weeks to do a biopsy for possible breast cancer on a 50 year old woman. Less than one percent of American administrators made this claim. according to the same survey, fifty percent of Canadian administrators versus none of their American counterparts stated that it would take over six months for a sixty-five year old to undergo a routine hip replacement surgery [2].

Plus when we had this conversation in OT a bunch of Canadians said they loved it was "free" but them having to make appointments months and months in advance were horribly frustrating.

I don't see why waiting lists are a problem, as long as they don't apply to emergency procedures that can't wait. Sure, it must be frustrating to wait 3 weeks for a biopsy or 6 weeks for routine hip surgery, but beggars can't be choosers. It's a lot more frustrating to have to declare bankruptcy and be financially ruined. If you want it immediately, you can pay for private care yourself, and if you need it immediately, apparently you can get that from the universal system.

Those are Canadians that can afford to get to the United States for treatment. Good for them and good for us. (economy wise)

But for the rest of us? We would just have to wait, because something is always better than nothing. If the rich can afford to jet around for the best treatment, great! The average Canadian cant do that and neither can the average American. This excuse is not good enough to deny basic healthcare for the general population.

You probably wouldnt be, but it is pretty selfish to deny others just because you consider it begging.

You would still be free to go to a private hospital and pay for that care you want.

I think this debate is really about compassion. I mean, the debate about taxes and small government is a lofty one.. but the nitty gritty is really about what kind of nation we want, and whether or not we have compassion for people who are unable to take care of themselves.

I think we are capable of accomplishing great things if we put our mind to it as a nation, I don't see why ensuring that all Americans have access to quality health care doesn't fit into a category of "great accomplishments"
