IEA to everyone "Build nuclear power plants"

Nuclear power is 'essential tool': IEA - Yahoo! News

Unless you're Iran or any other country we don't like of course. So when are we going to wake up as a race (human) and actually TRY to get off of the world's natural resources for power? Stop supporting oil...stop harrassing every little country that wants to build their own nuclear power sources...stop destroying the earth?

LONDON (AFP) - The International Energy Agency will urge countries around the world to accelerate construction of nuclear power plants next week, the IEA's chief economist told the Financial Times in an interview.

Fatih Birol, speaking ahead of the publication of the agency's World Energy Outlook, said that countries must convince their voters that nuclear power was both safe and an "essential tool" to meet domestic energy security, and global climate change, goals.

"We need a decision almost tomorrow if we are going to act before we reach a point of no return in climate and security of supply," Birol told the newspaper.

"We are on an energy path that is vulnerable, dirty and expensive," the report, due to be released November 7 in London, will say, according to the FT.

The goal, however, was to "prepare an alternative path ... to a cleaner, safer, less costly system," Birol said.

The IEA will say that nuclear power costs about as much as coal and gas, and concluded that there were sufficient uranium deposits to meet increased demand for places to dump nuclear waste.

Birol also said that the IEA's previous calculation of 17 trillion dollars (13.3 trillion euros) of investment required around the world in energy until 2030 would be revised upwards because of cost inflation.

Several countries around the world are planning to construct new power plants and others, such as Britain, are considering installing new ones.

That's fine. If they're an NPT signatory than they're welcome to develop nuclear power generation so long as they're under the inspection of the IAEA. They'll get all the benefits of being a signatory such as business from other NPT signatories on nuclear generation technology. If they're found in violation for whatever reason, such as hiding a program or information from the IAEA/UN... their power generation development should still continue but because trust was broken, enrichment should be done out of the country.

Don't know many nations that would agree to those conditions. Then again one can always withdraw from the treaty.

We must look like such a primitive race on this planet -- humans as a collective have the distinct capability of sub-atomic power generation. But given that; we barely use it because our psyches are feeble and easily swayed by mass-opinion

We're talking about nuclear power plants, which all NPT signatories have a right to develop under IAEA inspection. NUCLEAR WEAPONS TECHNOLOGY IS NOT A GIVEN RIGHT TO ANY COUNTRY unless they already had it before the NPT was formed. That's the point of the NPT. Countries with nuclear weapons want to prevent more nuclear weapons in the world... yet allow nuclear power generation.

Oil companies have spent billions and billions in the past 25 years to suppress technologies that do not require fossil fuels.

Yeah and the NPT is doing a bang up job. On top of that, how is it NOT a right? Who are we or anyone else to take it away, NPT or not? It isn't our RIGHT to regulate it.

Not Nuclear Technology. That would have been the chicken little "The sky is falling" left back in the 1970's. People got caught up in fictional B.S. like the Jane Fonda "China Syndrome" movie just like they swallow Al Gore's fiction on film now!

And I might add I take Nuclear Safty and Global Warming seriously. But when you go over the top and your motivations are primarily political you lose serious credibility on science issues.

Don't confuse a nation's rights with the agreed upon universal human rights. Individual nations DO NOT HAVE RIGHTS like people do unless they're agreed upon or granted by the region or worldwide community (ie: right to territory). Therefore a nation like the United States, the lone hyperpower on this planet, gives itself and reinforces other nuclear powers the ability to try and prevent nuclear weapons from developing in theatening countries. Don't forget NPT signatories SIGNED AND AGREED TO THE TREATY. They agreed to pursue only nuclear power generation and not to pursue nuclear weapons or hide information from the IAEA.

People have got to be unbelievably naive or ignorant to disagree with the principle of the NPT to prevent nuclear proliferation. It's certainly not perfect because of the trend of appeasement but it's certainly better than nothing. People must put so much faith in human nature or MAD to think nuclear weapons will police themselves even in the most unstable of hands.

Why did we give nuclear tech to india and support another country, isreal, who isn't even a part of the NPT?

It's kind of hard to go around waiving the NPT as a reason for things when we ignore it.

It seems the US deemed India and Israel responsible enough to conduct business. I their reasons for not signing the NPT.

We have no problem if Iran wants nuclear power. We just don't want them enriching uranium in such a way that it can be used for nuclear weapons. We offered them several very good ways to achieve this, but they refuse.

Nuclear power is nuclear power. It matters not how you obtain the fuel to run the reactors.

No people got caught up in The Love Canal. And later Chernobyl. Both scared the country badly and it was the public that backed away from Nuclear anything.

Ethanol has been around since the 70's, I used to buy it. But when the oil companies took over all gas distribution, they wouldnt allow the pumps thereby suppressing distribution and keeping most of the population in the dark. We could be way down the road to alternate fuels if it werent for big oil.
