THen how do they calculate them? Lets see how they ge their numbers.

I'm not sure why it's so out there to think they use the numbers they get from actually paying these people, the only way they have contact with them.

Surveys, the same way the govt calculates every other number.

unemployment is those who are activily seaking jobs divided by the workforce population.

That statistic only works in the Republicans favor. Otherwise it's junk.

it is a poll but what are the criteria that they use to determine if someone is looking for work and available for work when they conduct those polls? I have been looking through the BLS website and I can't seem to find anything.

As long as they use the same method everytime, you can use the change in numbers to mean something, just not the number itself as 100% truth. So, if it says 4% unemployment, you can't take 4% of 300 million and think that's exactly the number of unemployed. But as long as methods don't change, a fall from 5% to 4% can still be seen as a fall.

I am not nearly an expert on this all i have is my own experience, when i worked for the unemployment office we had to send report to our head office showing how many cases we had open/pending/closed. part of it was for our own reviews, seeing that we were doing our jobs the other part was "i was told" was used in calculateing the national unemployment rate, when my clients lost there benefits they were put into the no longer unemployed section. take what you will from that, honestly i dont know for sure what all goes into the calculations. (should have spell checker fixed somtime today sorry)

I think it's kinda like this..

If a serial killer donates some time to habitat for humanity and helps build a house.. the guy is still a killer and no one will remember or care that he built someone a house.

These numbers are significant for everybody! It is basic economics. Growing economies will drive down unemployment as people invest and expand business. Then when the job market tightens employers must offer better wages and benefits attract good new workers and to retain those who might shop for a jobs elsewhere. That is the best way to bring up real wages. Not left-wing Union demands for a "living wage." That just brings unemployment to the unfortunate few who don't keep their non-skilled entrylevel jobs and inflates costs for goods and services for the rest of us!
