Cliffs: Diebold optical scan machines scan in a ballot and "read" the vote from the paper. That info is then saved on a removeable memory card. All of the memory cards get collected and loaded into a database called "GEMS" and the votes are tabulated.
Some group hired a computer guru to see if he could hack the vote by only touching that memory card. Diebold swore up and down that it was not possible. The hacker guy did it fairly easily and there was no trace that anything had happened. He was able to change the vote totals.
Some district in ohio got a large campaign contribution from diebold and that same district then decided to spend 20 million dollars on diebold voting machines. The same ones that were easily hackable.

This same group also went to Florida and started asking to see the original tapes from the voting machines but they were given new tapes not originals. The originals were being thrown out, but they managed to grab a few and the originals did not match the tapes they were given. So something got fucked but no one would do anything about it.
