You mentioned amnesty, which I said it wasn't about in my very first reply. I said in my first reply that immigration may need to be slowed at times. That is very much NOT amnesty.

We knew EXACTLY what was going on, right from the begining. We were just too optimistic about it.
Things are completely different now than they were then. You can't compare the two.

Immigration is different now?

I think you'll have to be a bit more specific. Immigrants may no longer come across in boats, but immigrants still have to get registered. It's that process (and us not allowing enough immigration through that process) that is causing the current problem with illegal immigration. It's virtually no work for someone to go sign a piece of paper, get their fingerprints taken (which is something I think is a good idea with immigrants), and get a card to prove that they are a registered immigrant and allowed to work in the US.

So, again, what's so different?

The combat soldiers had the latest armor. Only the support guys had the older stuff.
How PRO military is it to not send enough soldiers to get the job done?
You want Bush to invent 200,000 soldiers overnight ?

Everything is different. Our ability to absorb immigrants into society is different. Our size is different. We set up a system of accepting immigrants into this society based on specific reasons; the main being our ability to assimilate them into the American culture. We have to know they can be absorbed economically, financially, educationally, etc. If we just refuse to accept the immigation laws already in place, we have a problem.

Sure it's good, if you're well enough off to benefit from the stock market, or if you're rolling in $$$ and don't like paying for a war that you probably support with your fair share of taxes. If you're working for peanuts, you'll be glad to see the minimum wage finally being raised . It's long overdue for that to happen. Also for tax loopholes to be closed for oil companies and war profiteers. Also for polluters to be held accountable for poisoning the air and water.

It costs very little to be in the stock market. As little or as much as you want.

No, we restricted their entry originally as a "too-little-too-late" approach to a 20 year old problem (at the time) that, at that time, wasn't even a problem anymore. We've grown since then, but what makes you think 300 million is enough or too many people to live in America? Everything points to us being able to increase our economy even more than it is, and one part of that includes allowing immigration (moreso than we do).

Just because we've been restricting immigration for the past 90 years doesn't make it right or good for the economy. As a matter of fact, federal involvement into the economy is RARELY good for it (you should know that as a conservative).
