Republicans: Focused on the Issues

NEW ORLEANS – A comedian impersonating President Obama made racially tinged jokes Saturday at the Republican Leadership Conference before being pulled off the stage by an event organizer.

The Obama impersonator, Reggie Brown, said that while the First Lady celebrated all of Black History Month, the bi-racial president only celebrated half the month.

Brown also said: "My mother loved a black man, and she was not a Kardashian."

Flashing a picture on the screen of Fred Sanford of “Sanford and Son” fame, the comedian said that’s what Obama would look like when he got older.

Brown didn’t just limit his jokes to Obama, though. He also mocked Mitt Romney’s Mormon faith, ridiculed Newt Gingrich’s faltering campaign and suggested Tim Pawlenty needed a spinal transplant.

As Brown was preparing to make a Michele Bachmann joke, one of the conference’s officials came out to the lectern and told the comedian to leave the stage.

It was a remarkable display and came just one day after two high-profile Republicans —- Haley Barbour and Bobby Jindal — urged activists to focus only on going after Obama on policy and not engage in personal attacks.

They were racial jokes not racist jokes. There is a difference. But either way, why waste time with an impersonation of obama? Why not just talk about how his policies have messed things up?

You'd think they'd of made sure he didn't hold anti-Repub sentiments and screened the jokes he planed on telling before something like this.

Propaganda gone bad!

I've seen more left-wing comics make racist/hate-inspired jokes in my lifetime than I've seen right-wingers. Many of them have headlined Democratic functions. Wanna go tit-for-tat? Tracy Morgan was bashing gays just last week in Tennessee, saying he'd kill his son if he ever turned out to be gay.

I guess my point is: shut up.

Ha ha ha.

1: Was Tracy Morgan at some Democrat function?

2: Isn't gay bashing a distinctively Conservative hate issue? To me that makes Tracy Morgan a Conservative.

All this shows is Republicans wanted cheap laughs to boister their supporters at the rally. Instead, the comedian (or whoever he is) turned it on everyone in the election and they freaked. You get what you paid for.

No, but it doesn't matter. The point is that conservatives are not the only people who make bad jokes, regardless of the venue.

No. If that is truly your position, then it is obvious you are profoundly ignorant both with regards to facts and with regards to logical analysis.

Washington Post, Nov 2008:
Most of California's Black Voters Backed Gay Marriage Ban
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 6 -- Any notion that Tuesday's election represented a liberal juggernaut must overcome a detail from the voting booths of California: The same voters who turned out strongest for Barack Obama also drove a stake through the heart of same-sex marriage.

Seven in 10 African Americans who went to the polls voted yes on Proposition 8, the ballot measure overruling a state Supreme Court judgment that legalized same-sex marriage and brought 18,000 gay and lesbian couples to Golden State courthouses in the past six months.

[N]o ethnic group anywhere rejected the sanctioning of same-sex unions as emphatically as the state's black voters, according to exit polls. Fifty-three percent of Latinos also backed Proposition 8, overcoming the bare majority of white Californians who voted to let the court ruling stand.

Washington Post, Feb.2011
:

What's with African American Opposition to Gay-Marriage in Maryland?
Now that the Maryland state Senate has passed
a marriage equality bill
, the action shifts to the House of Delegates where support for and against the measure is almost evenly split. Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, African American churches and lawmakers are figuring prominently in the opposition. And they are doing so with outdated and backward arguments that put them in the role of latter-day George Wallaces blocking the doors of marriage to committed gay and lesbian couples.

In his blog on the Maryland state senate debate of the bill, The Post's John Wagner wrote:
Sen. Joanne Benson (D-Prince George's) recalled her late father, a minister and "civil rights warrior," in explaining her intention to vote against the bill. Benson said she watched her father marry many people in their home and that she believes marriage should be reserved for people who can have children. "Two people of the same sex cannot produce children," Benson said.

Washington Post, March 2011:
Still, blacks remain the ethnic group least likely to support same-sex marriage. Only 30 percent say they back the unions, compared with 53 percent of all Democrats, 44 percent of whites and 41 percent of Hispanics, according to polling from the Pew Research Center.
Last I checked, African Americans aren't exactly "conservative" in their politics.

^ Good point about African-Americans and gay marriage. I recall several black scholars weighing in on this very subject, concluding it stems from deep homophobia within the culture and also, an alarming number of black men are closet bisexuals.

Why is it alarming that anyone, regardless of race, is bisexual? If that's how you came out (no pun intended), then more power to you. After all, if you are bi you just doubled your chances of getting some.

I believe I saw that on some C-SPANN televised conference for black culture. She made a few interesting points. But nice catch there.

I think what made it alarming, atleast coming from these black scholars, was the continuing homophobia within black society. Like it was said, African-Americans may lean Democrat because of social programs but they are rigorously conservative when it comes to gay marriage.

I really think that has to do with a history of being told you're inferior in society and being gay is a "sign" of weakness. Not saying it's right, but there's probably reason for it.

If I could remember the name of the conference or the professors I heard speak, I'd gladly provide a link. CTK out.

Marc Freden is on a distinguished road

You have Kobe Bryant shouting out the word Faggot...then again with the jets guy and David Tyree speaking out against Gay Marriage...and of course you have Tracey Morgan being downright hateful against gays and there are no ramifications. Even the sight of Weiner's Weiner has brought down a Congressman. Are people that afraid of Gays in this day and age? Well Marc Freden, too, has been given pause with the issue. As a gay man, even he feels the need to apologize for the blatant use of the word "Faggot" in his new book "REALLY!?!" Now Freden using the "F" word should get a tacit pass...much like black people using the "N" word to describe themselves. His harmless use of the word...(And you must read the book to understand) has lead him to a video mea culpa on YouTube "Marc Freden Must Apologize to the Gay Community". Furthermore, Freden has pledged that if Kobe Bryant can be fined $50,000 then he too should pay a price. A percentage of every book sold as a result of his apology will go to the Trevor Project - a gay hotline for distressed teens looking for a voice of calm and understanding. It is the least he can do. Who will join Freden in this cause?

This is much ado about nothing. A comedian said some things that offended the audience and the GOP kicked him off stage. Not really a big deal.

It's not the jokes, it's that the GOP lacked the intelligence to vet his politics before inviting him to a political rally. If they had been socialists and he a Holocaust denier, you'd be rolling on the ground laughing right now.

David, I have to agree with you on this one. The GOP leaders are dumber than dumb. How else can you explain how they can sometimes get the best message out, then turn around and fall flat on their faces when they should be following up on them?

If they had an above average IQ they could easily be the majority party for decades. But a Dumbass is still a Dumbass.
