| Conservative Party Loss New York's upstate District 23 has been Republican for a century, Ft Drum home of the 10th Mtn is in the district. In a special election to fill the vacated seat a lawyer and retired Air Force Captain, Bill Owens defeated Conservative Party candidate Business man Doug Hoffman. The 'traditional' Republican candidate, Dierdre Scozzafarve, was pressured to withdraw, and she did, because of her moderate stance on abortion and same sex marriage. Owens defeated Hoffman even though Republican registration tops democratic by 45,000 and heavyweights in the Social Conservative movement like Palin and Thompson coming to support Hoffman. Some had called this election a referendum on Obama as well as a place to hone the anti-Obama message. Victorious Owens downplayed that talk. Template for the Presidential Election ? | ||||
