Democracy is something to be cradled, not forcefully imposed. In a region of turmoil and unrest an American Democracy will solve no problems.

There core belief systems will not allow for a democracy, much less an American Democracy.

I think he's expecting the Iraqi people to step up to the plate and take responsibility for what's goin on in their country, rather than expecting the US to do it all for them. He feels they aren't really trying.

Can you really blame them? O'Rly doesn't understand the situation. He wants them to step up to the plate and fight for something that doesn't exist. These people are tribal, not nationalistic. They'd rather fight for their tribe, religious sect, etc., than the "country of Iraq." The only reason there was any semblance of nationalism in the country was because Saddam imposed it. O'Rly basically wants these people to forget the real sources of their identity and pride (religous sect and tribe), and instead risk their lives for a bullshit nationalistic illusion a former dictator used to impose on them.

Of course; everytime we talk about leaving they get all nervous and ask us to stay for a few more years. They need to try harder.

The government in power is nervous, not the people...you talk as though they are united and have a common goal.

He didnt mention the Kurds, just the sunni and shia. Actually no one mentions the Kurds much.

Iraq maybe waiting for us to clean up the mess we made when we invaded before they stand up so we can stand down. We did make one helluva mess of their everyday lives.

Don't they? They want to become stable so we can leave and let them do what they want. Isn't that a common goal between all of them? Do you really think they want instability in their country?

Right. The government wants to maintain power so of course they support the strength to do so.

Some of them probably want instability. As long as instability remains they have a chance to emerge with power.

In any case, even if they all wanted stability they may not be prepared to work together for it.

The problem is really Iraq does not have much national unity (making it hard for them to ..well unify)

Anybody who looks at a history book occasionally will tell you that before Saddam, there was instability there forever. just because Bushco thought it could impose it's will upon the various factions in that craphole of a country doesn't make it true. The chickens have come home to roost. And at the risk of busting a few bubbles around here, Iraq AIN'T America, and never will be. Hello?

Those who are used to living under tyranny haven't been doing so because they necessarily like it.

It's not about tyranny vs freedom for them, and it's important to understand that. They're not rejecting freedom because it's freedom and they're not ready..

They're rejecting America, and because we removed a secular Saddam government, want to rekindle and continue a centuries long battle mainly between Sunni and Shiites over who's really supposed to be in control of land, religion, etc..
