uTorrent help please.

yo!

dl = download
ul = upload

i just started using uTorrent for all of my bittonrent needs and i dig it, i really do. i was using torrentopia for a while, which wouldn't properly register my dl vs. ul ratio and i always found myself behind. i also like the feature that allows me to download only certain files (for instance, only certain episodes of a full season download). this also allows me to view the first few episodes while downloading the rest, instead of having to dl the whole season before viewing.

anyway, i've noticed some things that disturb me, and i was hoping to find answers here.

1. uTorrent seems much slower than torrentopia for some reason. and it is, actually, as i've dl'ed two files using each and torrentopia dl's faster. it seems to utilize more seeders, as i oftentimes notice that i'm not pulling from all of hte possible seeders using uTorr. i'll see this...

16 of 25 connected (65 in swarm)

why i am not dl'ing from all 25 (or all 65, for that matter)?

2. when using torrentopia, the greater the ul speed, the greater the dl speed, to a certain extent of course. but with uTorr, i've noticed that optimal dl speeds come only when my ul speed is relatively low - between 20-30 kb/s. is there a greater optimal ul speed, while dl'ing, as i hate to have to ul for days after i finish dl'ing. this is especially important when i am dl'ing whole seasons in excess of 6gb.

3. as i mentioned above, i like to set the first few episodes on high priority to finish and view before the whole season is completed. but when i do this, and it tries to pull from the file i'm viewing (to upload), and it can't because its being used by another program (i'm watching it), the file errors and the dl process stops. is there any way i can set that file to not upload while it pulls from the rest while i'm viewing it?

and yes, i've checked the faq's, but i can't find answers to these. thanks.

1. Look through the preferences (I don't have utorrent installed on my work computer, so I can't tell you exactly where) and increase the number of seeds you can connect to

2. Optimal upload speed is a little less than your max upwidth from your ISP. The reason for this is that pings don't get counted in your upload cap (that you set in preferences) or calculated download speed, so when you're connected to a lot of seeders, the back and forth talking to make sure everyone in the swarm is ok is slowing you down a good bit. I cap my upload baud at 30 kbs and can get crazy fast down speeds with that.

3. I have listened/viewed files already complete and have never had problems with it also uploading the file. The only time this would be a problem is if you're trying to write to the file (no idea why you would be). Infinite many programs (within the scope of the hardware) can read a file, but as soon as one wants to write to it, there must be only one user (there are ways around this when programming, but in general this is true). In other words, what you describe is weird and if I were you I'd try a different media player.

Hope that helps.

thanks for responding...

1. Look through the preferences (I don't have utorrent installed on my work computer, so I can't tell you exactly where) and increase the number of seeds you can connect to
maximum number of connected peers per torrent is already set to 500, and global maximum number of connects is set to 1000, with the number of upload slots at 100.
I cap my upload baud at 30 kbs and can get crazy fast down speeds with that.
i'll keep mine at 30 for now, and will check my ul speeds when current files finish.

The only time this would be a problem is if you're trying to write to the file (no idea why you would be). i use VLC media player as its seems to be the most robust. you mentioned writing to the file. in the lower window of the uTorr interface, on the tab marked files, in the mode column, it says 'read', then sometimes briefly 'write'.
