Also, Richards was given a lot of leeway by the audience, but when he didn't bring it back they turned on him. If he had said something like "there's a nigga...they neva kno when ta shut deir moufs" and brought it back to actual comedy I think people would have laughed (or at least not have been offended). When he just started shouting "nigger nigger nigger NIGGER NIGGER!!!" it wasn't funny, and he didn't seem like he was getting to comedy any time soon.

If this is the case, then it is not ok for ANYONE to use. But the moment it starts being OK for some and not for others is the point at which logic flies out the window and we slam in to the realm of yet another double standard. You cannot have your cake and eat it too.

It is one or the other. It has to be. It is either OK to say or not OK to say, and this applies to ALL, not some.

It's already been said and someone already called it a weak apologist's view so it's not worth saying again, but wtf I'll say it again............. a white person using the word nigger has a completely different meaning than a black person using it. Blacks (in the US) never systematically owned, bought, sold, or killed "niggers." Whites did.

You ever wonder why cracka, honkey, casper, etc don't bother white people? Because they don't come with any implied threat. Nobody in power ever used that word and then owned, bought, sold, or killed whites.

Yes I realized that this owning, buying, selling, and killing hasn't happened in a long time, but in reality it's been less than 40 years since there was *extremely* widespread injustice and racism (ignoring the pockets that still exist today). There are many blacks alive today who were seriously fucked over by "the man" for no reason other than racism. If we were starting *today* then it'd be a different story. Nigger and cracka would have the same weight. But we're not starting today, nigger has a history, and it wasn't a pretty one.

Lastly (I know I'm rambling but I also don't care because I know your'e going to pick one sentence and say "this is the problem" and ignore the bigger message) I also understand that kids today have no "right" to get pissed when they hear the word, but they do. IMO that comes from a combination of ignorance, entitlement, and a desire to "own" a word that "white people" can't use. They fly way off the deep end when a white person uses it because they think a white person isn't supposed to use it and (in their view) it shows disrespect. In that way it's not much different than if you stare at a black guy on a bus or on the street.......to you it's staring, to him it's disrespect. To you it's a reason to ignore him or get up and move, to him it's a reason to fight.

Now ignore everything I said but keep one thing in mind.....*you* do not get to choose what pisses someone else off. So you can sit that and rationalize how "a word is a word" all you want, but if it pisses him off you better run.
