Iran holds summit with Iraq, Syria

Iran to host summit with Iraq, Syria - Mideast/N. Africa - MSNBC.com

While the US is skeptical of any results from this, I think the main thing it shows is that Iran is solidifying their position in the region. I do doubt they will have much success and it will probably just be an anti-israel/anti-US meeting, more of public display or political statement than anything else.

However, the implications can be quite troublesome if Iran does suceed in helping Iraq and the violence tones down. Afterall, rumor has it that the foreign fighters, IED materials, etc are actually coming from Iran and Syria. If they can strike a deal that says Iran and Syria will watch their borders to prevent that kind of thing, we may actually see a drop in fighting. Of course, the US and Iran will argue over who created this decline but nearly everyone in the region will give Iran credit for helping with something the US has been unable to do.

We should be involved in it. We don't HAVE to agree to anything, but we should be there to discuss what we want, and you know, have actual diplomacy with the neighboring countries of those we've invaded.

Who knows, we might actually be able to make some progress on the nuclear thing as well if we can actually sit down and discuss things.

It's a long shot, but what do we have to lose by trying?
