Fox News to make 'Daily Show' Rip-Off

G4 - The Feed

Boy, Fox News must really hate The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. How much? So much that they're developing a similar show from the conservative perspective. It was going to be called This Just In until HBO and AOL made an announcement earlier this week to name their new broadband network the same thing.

Still, it promises to skewer and satirize news from a convervative perspective. Whew. That's gonna be HI-larious. Except for one thing...

Conservatives aren't funny.

Not intentionally, at least.

We spent a good long time here at Feed Central trying to think of which conservatives from the arsenal of hilarious Republicans they might use for the new programming.

You know what we came up with?

Not a lot. Dennis Miller, but he's not really a Republican so much as a reactionary. We ascertained that Drew Carey was a Libertarian, but couldn't agree whether he'd fit, or, in fact, was funny. And sjohnson thinks that Ann Coulter is pretty funny, and that her schtick is all a joke, but I'm not convinced.

So, where does that leave us? Probably with some pretty unfunny comedians living just to take revenge-minded potshots at Democrats because they're bitter that we're funnier, smarter, and better looking than they are.

I give it about a week before it's off the air. Remember, Fox was also responsible for The Chevy Chase Show. Probably they thought that was going to be a scream, too.

They must really be steamed at the Daily Show's popularity.

I don't see this doing very well or being any good.

It had high ratings despite the scheduling and was influential in many conservative talk shows across the nation, not to mention shown around the world. But I also remember that the schedules were quite different, for at least where I was the show started at midnight then was scheduled for five thirty pm.

Dennis Miller is funny, IMO.

And Fox has made some of the most successful shows on television. Not to mention Fox, itself, is the newest of the Big Four and it's slowly working its way to #1. Further, Fox News is the #1 news channel in America.

I'm a pretty big fan of Fox. I like a lot of their shows, and I like a lot of the News Corp subsidiaries. I'm not a big fan of Fox News at all, but I think that this could be successful, given Fox's history.

I think people are once again underestimating Fox and the desire for conservative news television. There's a reason Hannity and O'Rielly do so well. If Fox unveils a decent, humorous show I don't see why it wouldn't give the Daily Show and Colbert Report a run for their money. There's obviously a market in it, if Fox can properly tap into it, it could be a huge success.

Is any of what Fox says untrue? It's all a matter of perspective and what ideology you subscribe to.

I edit so often, I may have. I honestly don't remember.

But I don't recall Fox ever flat out purposely lying to it's viewers about factual information. They may have a bias, but and that all depends on what ideology you subscribe to. If you're going to compare John Stewart to Fox News over who fear mongers more I think it's an extremely radical position to take. John Stewarts entire show is dedicated to it.

I wanted the Dems to win the midterm and I'm glad they did. But you need to look within both parties equally and not allow personal bias to get in the way. John Stewart and the Democrats use fear-mongering as do the GOP and Fox News.

Jon Stewart already had a hot item

Look at another "left of center" "fake news show" SNL, its just not that funny

He came in with a good idea, and then worked YEARS to build it up

Colbert worked with Stewart for years while spending years imitating right-wingers in many segments

You can't just start from scratch

Note another thing, the Daily Show/Colbert Report relies on a lot of people who aren't very politically active

The only way this "works" and by works I mean "doesn't have horrible ratings" would be if they plug it inbetween OReally and the Sean Hannity show and everyone who never turns off Fox would be forced to watch it

It's all in the execution. Either this show will be funny and entertaining or it won't. But I think there's a mismatched demographic problem here. I don't know that FNC has the type of viewers which would enjoy a Daily Show style show.
