Democrats Reject Key 9/11 Panel Suggestion

Promises made, promises broken.

But with control of Congress now secured, Democratic leaders have decided for now against implementing the one measure that would affect them most directly: a wholesale reorganization of Congress to improve oversight and funding of the nation's intelligence agencies. Instead, Democratic leaders may create a panel to look at the issue and produce recommendations, according to congressional aides and lawmakers.
Have they already forgotten?

It was a solemn pledge, repeated by Democratic leaders and candidates over and over: If elected to the majority in Congress, Democrats would implement all of the recommendations of the bipartisan commission that examined the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

You don't mean to suggest that the liberal tendencies of the party were placed in mothballs while they put on a show of bipartisan moderation just to win a midterm election do you?

I will be disappointed if they don't impliment the congressional oversight plans from the panel. However, even implimenting SOME of their suggestions is better than taking no action at all like our president chose to do.

They do really need to do it though, to keep through with their promise of "ALL" and to keep up with Pelosi's statement that "this will be the most honest and transparent congress".

They are not lying just yet. Wait till they officially take control and see what they actually put through. Though shameful to lie about it, that misleading action would not cost 400+ billion dollars, 2600 american lives, 22,000 wounded americans, 50,000 dead Iraqis, and cause one of our main enemies (Iran) to have a significant increase in their influence in the entire region. In addition to the promise of smaller government, fiscal responsibility, to do something about abortion, and to "protect" marriage from queers... none of which they have done.

I will hold my party to responsible for their lies, I just hope you hold your party responsible for theirs.

I would like to see a quote from a Democrats saying they won't impliment the 9/11 commisions reccomendations.

Citing a conservative opinion piece isn't proof to me.

How about this shit for the promise of fiscal responsibility???

Those people, the appropriators, do not seem to care much, he said. The intelligence budget is a small fraction of the nearly $500 billion overseen by the armed services committees and the appropriations panels' defense subcommittees. Kean said that Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), an Armed Services Committee member, told the Sept. 11 commission that if his panel spends 10 minutes considering the intelligence budget, it has been a good year.

They dont even fucking read or think about what they are spending.. they are just signing it.

Well, that's disappointing, but they're not officially in power yet and apparently that's some anonymous tipster. The Democrats need to remember how much "people powered politics" had to do with their wins, and I would bet that if they fail to live up to their promises they're going to be called on it, pressured to stick to what they said, and held to account in upcoming elections..

They wont be in power long if they don't. Their message was, we're about reform, oversight, transparency, and we'll keep our promises. If they start looking like Republicans and doing the opposite, people wont turn out for them in '08.

The Washionton Post wrote that?

Why does the article say it was written by Weisman?

Again, please post some quotes of Democrats saying this or it's all just speculation and bullshit.

..as opposed to the conservative tendencies of the party getting in the way of progress when they first took power in the 90s? Pot? Kettle? Did you actually expect politicians to do right by their electorates?

They should implement the recommendations unless there is a good reason for not doing so.
