I don't like that they get their own police escorts like that. They aren't a security force.
If the police are worried about their security, perhaps they should bar them from getting that close.

You can't possibly endorse this. If they pushed back Phelps' group because of fear of violence police would have a blank check to push back every protest group that may inspire anger.

By chasing them Phelps got exactly what he wanted. He pissed people off and gained attention in the news. Hell, he might find some way to finagle a lawsuit out of it all.

these bigots should, IMO, quite simply, be totally ignored altogether*, for what does it say about my mental health to indulge my extreme distaste for their views?

OTOH perhaps repressing my 'desire to hate' isnt 'healthy' either.

*except possibly to counter their arguements should i find my self engaged with those on the 'margin' willing to give them credibility

I don't like the idea of the cops being able to push protesters back, but I like it better than the police acting as private bodyguards for people who are trying to incite violence.
