Bolton was not there with the idea of working with the UN but using it. Most other nations have similar positions hence why it is "useless".

A group of people working towards different goals at least some of them will consider the organisation useless.

Not sure what your point is here?

We have to be a part of something if we expect to be able to change it for the better..

Exactly.

Though, I think the UN should be viewed as a tool, we have to come into it with the mindset that we don't own the world, other people and other countries have rights, and we have to work toward diplomatic solutions to problems rather than expecting we can do everything by ourselves and don't need anyone.

I think the UN has many problems and is in need of serious reform, but in order for that to take place we have to recognize that we're one nation among many, and while that doesn't mean we should shirk our leadership responsibilities, it does mean we need to have respect.

It is a tool. Not one to get what you want, but as a place of open communication and debate on world problems. You get what you want through the confidential channels of your State Department and Embassy. We do need to work "with" the UN, but not for it. It is not world government.

I am not proposing that is. That would be something altogether different.

The point I am making is when the US complains about the UN being useless it seems to line up with the UN not doing what the US wants.

The UN should be nations coming together to work on common goals and problems. The difficulty is the viewpoints of the nations involved are extremely diverse making it hard to come to many agreements.
