Revealing x-ray machine raises privacy concerns in US

A new full-body x-ray machine to be tested this month at a US airport has raised concerns about privacy issues with some rights advocates saying the technology amounts to a virtual strip search.
The "Backscatter" machine to be used at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in Arizona will enable screeners to detect non-metallic devices and objects as well as weapons on a person's body, authorities say.

But critics, including the American Civil Liberties Union, say the machine can display graphic images of nude bodies and its use will pave the way to widespread abuse of the images taken, with some possibly being posted or traded on the Internet.
Federal officials, however, have downplayed such concerns saying that screeners will be able to blur out a person's genitals and that the x-ray image will be erased from the screen once a passenger is cleared through the machine.
The Transportation Security Officer operating the system will also not be able to print, store or transmit the image and will be viewing the x-ray in an area not visible to the public. Officials said "Backscatter" will be a voluntary option for passengers undergoing secondary screening and is an alternative to the physical pat down procedures currently conducted at security checkpoints.

Like anyone cares about what you look like in an Air Port X-Ray machine! Just keep the guys with criminal records, like know perverts, from being operators. More of much to do over nothing.

I wonder how you'd like it if your mother's or SO's xray picture was splashed all over the internet...not to mention any public figure you admire or like will be basically naked all over the internet for mocking

People with an obvious criminal record, including, but not limited to sex offender. Legal porn on the internet is not a criminal act. Bad choice of words, but I think you know what I meant.

As Kytro said you have a choice and if operated by responcible people this is no more a privacy violation than a trip to the doctors office.

Who would want to look at anyones x-ray other than say Brittany Spears and she is flashing all over town!

If everyone's xray is all over the net, I doubt it would be much of an issue.

Let's be realistic...it's a damn x-ray. It's not like that's showing much.

How long until there's filters released for camera's that do the same thing?

I remember seeing something awhile back that did something similar.. trying to remember the name. There was even a video of it.

i can see why the aclu would be interested in something like this, but i believe you're embellishing the issue with your headline, as i see nothing on the aclu site about this.

can you really not see why a civil liberties group might be concerned about this?

I remember seeing something awhile back that did something similar.. trying to remember the name. There was even a video of it.

it was all the rage on voyeur websites. i believe it was a filter for high sunlight made for camcorders, etc.

It's an alternative to a pat down. If they would prefer to be touched, then that's fine. If they prefer this method, then that's fine as well. Nobody's rights are being violated more than they are during a pat down and being touched by someone. Plus this procedure will be optional. What rights are violated if someone chooses to undergo this?
